  • Appraising the cohesion of palaeoenvironmental reconstructions in north-west Spain since the mid-Holocene from a high temporal resolution multi-proxy peat record

    Open Access•Bettina S Stefanini, Pirita Oksanen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2017•Referências: 28

Investigation of abrupt palaeohydrological regime change remains challenging due to site-specific noise ratios and the limitations of dating control and spatial resolution of multi-proxy records. Some of these issues are addressed through a well dated and highly resolved record from an ombrotrophic peatland in Galicia, north-west Spain. The site is in an ideal location to record marine influences and test models of past palaeoclimatic boundaries …

  • Quantifying woodland resource usage and selection from Neolithic to post Mediaeval times in the Irish Midlands

    Ellen OCarroll, Ellen O’Carroll et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2016•Citada por: 2•Referências: 7

The antiquity and context (site or feature type) are the two principal factors that act as a framework for interpreting charcoal and wood data from archaeological sites in the recreation of past woodland environments. This research addresses these parameters through the analysis of over 18,000 charcoal fragments from 57 archaeological excavations carried out along a 61 km road scheme in the midland region of Ireland. Observations on spatial veget…

  • Pollen‐based quantitative reconstructions of Holocene regional vegetation cover (plant‐functional types and land‐cover types) in Europe suitable for climate modelling

    Open Access•Anna‐Kari Trondman, A-K Trondman et al.•ARTICLE•Global Change Biology•2015

We present quantitative reconstructions of regional vegetation cover in north‐western Europe, western Europe north of the Alps, and eastern Europe for five time windows in the Holocene [around 6k, 3k, 0.5k, 0.2k, and 0.05k calendar years before present ( bp )] at a 1° × 1° spatial scale with the objective of producing vegetation descriptions suitable for climate modelling. The REVEALS model was applied on 636 pollen records from lakes and bogs to…

  • Informed Choice for Disabled Young People in Transition

    Fraser Mitchell•ARTICLE•Practice•2014•Citada por: 1•Referências: 6

This paper explores informed choice (a key component of self-directed support and personalised services) for disabled young people in transition by means of secondary analysis of archived qualitative interview data using a thematic network approach. Insights were gained into the roles of parents, professionals and how information is used in informing choice for disabled young people. The findings add value to this emerging area of policy and prac…

  • Facilitators and barriers to informed choice in self-directed support for young people with disability in transition

    Open Access•Fraser Mitchell•ARTICLE•Health & Social Care in the…•2014•Citada por: 3•Referências: 6

The objective of this qualitative study was to explore the concept of 'informed choice' in the context of self-directed support (SDS) for young people with disability in transition from child to adult services. SDS is a major policy initiative introduced by the Scottish government to promote personalised services by redefining the relationship between the citizen and the state regarding social care supports. Informed choice is one of the underpin…

  • Establishing chronologies for woodland small hollow and mor humus deposits using tephrochronology and radiocarbon dating

    Open Access•Eileen Reilly, Fraser Mitchell et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Citada por: 2•Referências: 14

Chronological precision is a pre-requisite for all palaeoecological analyses, especially in more recent Holocene deposits such as small hollow peat and mor humus in woodlands. Here, tephrochronology was employed to improve the chronological control of such deposits to aid subsequent sub-fossil insect analyses from three sites in western and southwestern Ireland. Six tephra layers were detected from the three small hollows but only one from the mo…

  • Carer support groups

    Open Access•Fraser Mitchell•ARTICLE•Health & Social Care in the…•2007•Citada por: 4

Carer support groups are recognized as being a service aimed directly at meeting the needs of informal carers. Previous research has shown the value of carer groups in offering emotional support and information. This frequently, and probably most effectively, takes place informally between members of the group. This paper describes a study of six carer support groups in Glasgow. Support groups vary considerably in their organization. The factors …

  • Human impact on the Irish landscape during the late Holocene inferred from palynological studies at three peatland sites

    Open Access•Edwina Cole, Edwina E Cole et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2003•Citada por: 4•Referências: 11

Pollen data covering the last 1200 years from a transect of three peatland sites across Ireland are reported. The data reveal reductions in woodland and increased anthropogenic activity over time. A decline in Corylus-type pollen at around AD 1750 was a dramatic and concurrent event at all three sites which coincided with more intensive land use. Multivariate data analysis reveals that prior to the Corylus-type decline distinct regional differenc…

  • Supporting relatives of adults with chronic mental illness in the community

Fraser Mitchell, George Ralston et al.•ARTICLE•Practice•1998•Referências: 3

Relatives of adults with chronic mental illness are recognised as an important provider of care for this vulnerable population. Carers, alongside service users, are being encouraged to be more involved in developing plans for care and treatment in the community for people with severe and long term mental health problems through arrangements such as the care programme approach. However, many relatives continue to express dissatisfaction with menta…

  • Investigation of the environmental impact of remote volcanic activity on north Mayo, Ireland, during the mid-Holocene

    Open Access•Rosaleen B Dwyer, Fraser J G Mitchell et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1997•Citada por: 6•Referências: 4

Seven layers of microscopic tephra have been detected in ombrotrophic peat from western Ireland. A radiocarbon chronology suggests that two of the tephra layers were deposited around 4000 BP. Pollen, fungal spores and testate amoebae have been analyzed from the peat immediately above and below the tephra layers. These analyses provide information of changes in the landscape surrounding the bog and as well as conditions on the bog surface. Analysi…

  • The role of the social worker with carer support groups

    Fraser Mitchell•ARTICLE•Practice•1996•Citada por: 1•Referências: 2

Carer support groups are widely recognised as being an effective resource for meeting the needs of caregivers for emotional support and information. There is debate in the literature about the role and effectiveness of professional support with such groups. This article describes the results of a survey conducted by the author to identify the role and style of group support workers and the effectiveness of professional involvement. Social workers…

  • Assessment of the impact of past disturbance and prehistoric Pinus sylvestris on vegetation dynamics and soil development in Uragh Wood, SW Ireland

    Open Access•Declan Little, D J Little et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1996•Citada por: 2•Referências: 3

Soil and pollen analysis from an acidophillous oak wood in southwest Ireland are presented. Radio carbon dating provides a temporal scale for pedogenesis and the parallel dynamics of the woodland vegetation. The dominance of Pinus in the wood before 2000 BP, anthropogenic disturbance 300 years ago and intermittent fire are all investigated as causal factors in podzol development at this site. The dominance of Pinus in the wood came to an abrupt e…

  • Relationship of stomatal density and index of Salix cinerea to atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations in the Holocene

    Open Access•Jennifer C McElwain, J McElwain et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1995•Referências: 1

The impact of different concentrations of ambient CO 2 on the stomatal density and index of Salix cinerea are investigated. Fossil leaves (AMS dated 9190 BP) and present-day material from the same site in south west Ireland are compared with nineteenth-century herbarium material from Ireland. Techniques for obtaining reliable counts of stomata and epidermal cells from hairy leaves with sunken stomata are reported. Stomatal density and index were …
