  • Paleoenvironmental Studies in Southwestern Yukon

Open Access•Konrad Gajewski, Joan Bunbury et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2014

The St. Elias Mountain region has occupied an important place in the study of the Quaternary because it presents a relatively accessible non-polar icefield and an array of environments from tundra to boreal forest. Paleoenvironmental studies in southwestern Yukon have documented the broad-scale climatic changes of the past 20 000 years, although few studies exist with well-dated sequences at high temporal resolution. Picea glauca arrived across t…

  • Long-term successional changes in peatlands of the Hudson Bay Lowlands, Canada inferred from the ecological dynamics of multiple proxies

    Open Access•Kathryn E Hargan, Kathleen M Rühland et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Citada por: 1•Referências: 10

Peatlands in northern Ontario, Canada, archive multiple biological indicators, including macrofossils, algae, testate amoebae, and pollen. These proxies can provide insights concerning the timing and nature of long-term climatic and environmental changes. The Hudson Bay Lowlands (HBL) of central Canada contain one of Earth’s largest continuous peatland complexes, and thus comprehensive spatial and temporal studies are needed to understand the imp…

  • A database and synthesis of northern peatland soil properties and Holocene carbon and nitrogen accumulation

    Open Access•Julie Loisel, Zicheng Yu et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Citada por: 21•Referências: 11

Here, we present results from the most comprehensive compilation of Holocene peat soil properties with associated carbon and nitrogen accumulation rates for northern peatlands. Our database consists of 268 peat cores from 215 sites located north of 45°N. It encompasses regions within which peat carbon data have only recently become available, such as the West Siberia Lowlands, the Hudson Bay Lowlands, Kamchatka in Far East Russia, and the Tibetan…

  • Effects of the White River Ash Event on Aquatic Environments, Southwest Yukon, Canada

    Open Access•Joan Bunbury, Konrad Gajewski•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2013

Chironomid and sedimentary records from four lakes in the southwest Yukon reveal that the effects of the White River Ash event on aquatic environments varied with distance from the source vent, with sites closer to the source experiencing a greater impact. Upper Fly and Jenny Lakes, located ~200 km away from the volcano, had the thinnest ash layers. The Upper Fly site showed no response to the fallout of the ash, but at Jenny Lake the ash event a…

  • Temperatures of the past 2000 years inferred from lake sediments, southwest Yukon Territory, Canada

    Open Access•Joan Bunbury, Konrad Gajewski•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2012

Lake sediments from four sites in the southwest Yukon Territory, Canada, provided paleotemperature records for the past 2000 yr. An alpine and a forest site from the southeastern portion of the study area, near Kluane Lake, and another alpine-forest pair of lakes from the Donjek River area located to the northwest yielded chironomid records that were used to provide quantitative estimates of mean July air temperature. Prior to AD 800, the southwe…

  • Holocene hydro-climatic change and effects on carbon accumulation inferred from a peat bog in the Attawapiskat River watershed, Hudson Bay Lowlands, Canada

    Open Access•Joan Bunbury, Sarah A Finkelstein et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2012

Multiple proxies from a 319-cm peat core collected from the Hudson Bay Lowlands, northern Ontario, Canada were analyzed to determine how carbon accumulation has varied as a function of paleohydrology and paleoclimate. Testate amoeba assemblages, analysis of peat composition and humification, and a pollen record from a nearby lake suggest that isostatic rebound and climate may have influenced peatland growth and carbon dynamics over the past 6700 …

  • Biogeography of Freshwater Ostracodes in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago

    Open Access•Joan Bunbury, Konrad Gajewski•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2009

Seven species of freshwater ostracodes were identified from the sediments of 43 lakes on eight islands across the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. No ostracodes were encountered in the sediments of almost half of the lakes, and most were found at sites that had higher alkalinity. Several taxa endemic to Arctic regions are found across the Arctic Archipelago, including Candona rectangulata Alm, Limnocythere liporeticulata Delorme, and Tonnacypris glac…

  • Effects of the White River Ash Event and Climate Change on Aquatic Ecosystems in the Southwest Yukon

    Open Access•Joan Bunbury•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2009

"Freshwater lake environments are affected by disturbances on several scales that influence the composition of biological communities. A volcanic eruption is an abrupt and severe disturbance, and evidence of its impact is seen in lake sediments and soils as a layer of ash. These volcanic deposits affect aquatic ecosystems in lakes: large volumes of tephra can literally smother organisms living at the sediment-water interface, though the thinner l…
