  • Climate and Vegetation Change, Hillslope Soil Erosion, and the Complex Nature of Late Quaternary Environmental Transitions, Eastern Mojave Desert, USA

    Open Access•Joseph R McAuliffe, Leslie D McFadden et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2022

In what are now the warm deserts of the American Southwest, direct effects of changing climate on plant distributions are typically viewed as the principal driver of vegetation changes that followed the late Pleistocene–Holocene transition (LPH). However, at a semi-arid site in the eastern Mojave Desert, the transition to modern, shrub-dominated desert scrub on xeric, south-aspect hillslopes occurred only after the erosion of relatively thick soi…

  • Soil horizon development and the tempo and modes of vegetation change during the Holocene in a Sonoran Desert basin, USA

    Open Access•Joseph R McAuliffe•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2019•Referências: 3

Silt-rich and clay-rich vesicular horizons (V horizons) that develop beneath desert pavements limit infiltration and plant-available soil moisture. A radiocarbon date from buried charcoal constrains the timing of emplacement of a Sonoran Desert alluvial fan deposit to the very end of the Pleistocene (approximately 12.7 ka). The surface of the fan is dotted with 1.5–3 m light-colored plant scars that mark places once occupied by larger perennial p…

  • Holocene environmental change and vegetation contraction in the Sonoran Desert

    Open Access•Joseph R McAuliffe, Eric V Mcdonald•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2006

Two types of microtopographic features ( plant scar mounds and plant scar depressions ) on surfaces of barren desert pavements provide a unique record of the former presence of large perennial plants. Evidence of bioturbation by burrowing animals extends more than 1 m beneath each type of plant scar, indicating that both features originated as large bioturbation mounds. Formation of bioturbation mounds in desertscrub environments is generally res…

  • Elevational Shifts of Coleogyne ramossissima in the Mojave Desert during the Little Ice Age

    Open Access•Kimberly L Hunter, Joseph R McAuliffe•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1994

Plant macrofossils from woodrat ( Neotoma ) middens collected in the Mojave Desert of southern Nevada were used to reconstruct the timing and magnitude of vegetation change during the past 1000 yr. Although vegetation at the site now is dominated by the shrub Coleogyne ramossissima , this species does not occur in fossil middens prior to 600 ± 50 yr B.P. The appearance and persistence of C. ramosissima in middens was coincident with the Little Ic…
