Climate change as an arena of wartime political struggles
This article examines how climate change discourses and actions become entangled with political struggles under conditions of violent conflict. Focusing on post-coup Myanmar – marked by violent conflict, high exposure to climate risk and widespread resistance to military authoritarian rule – we analyze how competing actors deploy ‘greening’ as part of antagonistic struggles over authority, territorial control, and international recognition. In this article I examine how the broadening of personal hopes and aspirations through new community-based English educational sites during this period influenced young people’s understandings of eudaimonic wellbeing. Towards a Moral Understanding of Karen State's Paradoxical Buddhist Strongmen
This article considers the role that armed Plong (Pwo) Karen Buddhist strongmen play as moral authorities in their home communities, rather than their coercive and extractive qualities. Based on eighteen months of fieldwork in Hpa-an district, Karen State, it demonstrates that their ability to act as moral authorities in their home communities is embedded in elaborate social notions of interdependency. This article examines the ways in which young Plong Karen Buddhist women enact morality in southeastern Myanmar.
