Estimating the Number and Prevalence of Forced Labor Victims Among Domestic Workers in Casablanca, Morocco
Estimating the Prevalence of Domestic Servitude Among Tanzanian Women Who Have Returned from Working Overseas
Estimating Young Women Working in Kathmandu’s Adult Entertainment Sector
This study estimates the prevalence of young women, defined as women aged 17 and younger, working in Kathmandu Valley’s adult entertainment sector. A hybrid strategy based on respondent-driven sampling and venue-based studies, giving rise to a mark-recapture estimation strategy, was applied. A sample of 600 female workers were reached through respondent driven sampling, and a sub-sampled set of female workers surveyed within the sampled venues. T…
Concentrations of harm
Human trafficking and ‘modern slavery’ cover a wide, varied and poorly delineated range of exploitative practices. Yet, conflating different issues risks obscuring important variation. The geographies of trafficking are surprisingly under-researched, particularly quantitatively. Informed by opportunity theories, we examined geospatial and demographic concentrations in trafficking and related exploitation formally identified in the United Kingdom …
Does Anyone Care? -The Prevalence of Forced Labor Among Kenyan Migrant Workers and the Glaring Need for Better Labor Conditions in GCC Countries
Much media coverage in recent years has identified the abuses of migrant workers in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (e.g. Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, United Arab Emirates [UAE], and Saudi Arabia), an increasingly popular migrant destination for Kenyan workers. Due to their unique geo-political and economic profiles, these countries with widespread human rights violations have remained non-responsive primarily to pressure from the i…
Does Exotic Dancing Lead to Prostitution? An Exploratory Study
This study explored contextual variables within strip clubs employing exotic dancers as well as dancers’ characteristics, as potential correlates of prostitution. Face-to-face anonymous interviews were conducted with exotic dancers in San Diego County (N = 123). Logistic regression revealed that nonwhite race, allowing customer touching, illegal drug use, and number of dances per shift were significant predictors of prostitution, while childhood …
Situational Action Theory and School Bullying
Utilizing a sample from Chinese schools, we test the key ingredients of Situational Action Theory within the context of school bullying in a non-Western culture. The results show that morality has a robust effect on bullying behaviors, whereas control mechanisms (i.e., self-control and deterrence) have little restraining effect when personal morality is low. Our findings, together with prior mixed findings regarding conditional effects of control…
Progress and Challenges in Human Trafficking Research
The research community on human trafficking has grown significantly in the past two decades, and consequently produced a large body of literature. There is much to celebrate – the volume of scholarship and advocacy literature have exerted sizable influence on policy making and funding priorities. More specifically, much progress has been made on measurement and prevalence estimation techniques, and some consensus is forming gradually on the commo…
Beyond Drugs, Smuggling and Trafficking
Methodological Challenges and Innovations in the Application of Multiple Systems Estimation (MSE) to Measure Modern Slavery in Developed Countries
Estimating the Size of the Human Trafficking Problem
The prevalence of human trafficking has remained as elusive as the method of producing its estimation is contested. There are significant variations in the way prevalence estimation is produced, with some methods garnering more attention than others. To complicate the issue further, the hidden nature of human trafficking makes it difficult to apply conventional probability-based sampling strategies, without which for reference purposes one cannot…
Repertoires of Protest and Repression in Contemporary China
This article reviews how protest events in China take forms that are notably distinct from those of the Marxist-Leninist regimes of the twentieth century. It chronicles the upward trajectory of protests in China, remarkable because the trend occurs in a governance structure that seeks to limit independent civil society and the collective expression of grievances. We review several dimensions in which claims and grievances cluster, most of which c…
The Prevalence of Bonded Labor in Three Districts of Karnataka State, India
This paper presents the results of a prevalence study of bonded labor in three districts of Karnataka State, India. Using a unique application of mark-recapture analysis, enumerators surveyed 4,306 laborers in marketplaces from April to June 2015, capturing data on 15 distinct industries across 3,765 worksites. Based on these surveys, an estimated 33.4% of the laborers interviewed were bonded and 30.5% were suspected to have been trafficked to th…
Rumors, Encounters, Collaborations, and Survival
The violence afflicting the Mexican migration corridor has often been explained as resulting from the brutal takeover of migrant smuggling markets by organized crime, specifically Mexican drug trafficking organizations (DTOs). Through the testimonies of twenty-eight migrants who traveled with smuggling facilitators on their journeys into the United States and who interacted with drug traffickers during their transit, we argue that the metamorphos…
Crimes of Solidarity in Mobility
In this volume of The ANNALS, we present a collection of empirically based research projects on migrant smuggling, seeking to create a more nuanced understanding of the topic that supersedes perspectives that are often found in mainstream narratives of unscrupulous and ruthless criminal gangs preying on vulnerable and desperate migrants. The contributing authors rely on field data to reveal the complex and often symbiotic relationships between mi…

Neighborhood Social Control and Perceptions of Crime and Disorder in Contemporary Urban China
By drawing on the two streams of Western literature on “neighborhood effects” and perceptions of neighborhood disorder adapted to the distinctive organizational infrastructure of neighborhoods in contemporary urban China, we examine the contextual effects of different forms of neighborhood social control (i.e., collective efficacy, semipublic control, public control, and market‐based control) on different types of perceived disorder (i.e., crimin…
The Chinese Heroin Trade
In a country long associated with the trade in opiates, the Chinese government has for decades applied extreme measures to curtail the spread of illicit drugs, only to find that the problem has worsened. Burma is blamed as the major producer of illicit drugs and conduit for the entry of drugs into China. Which organizations are behind the heroin trade? What problems and prospects of drug control in the so-called "Golden Triangle" drug-trafficking…
Estimating Labor Trafficking Among Farmworkers
The lack of knowledge on the magnitude of the human-trafficking problem regionally and internationally remains the weakest link in the current countertrafficking movement and has given rise to estimates and unsubstantiated claims. However, difficult-to-count populations such as trafficking victims pose significant sampling challenges for social scientists because a sampling frame cannot be reliably established. As a result, field researchers ofte…
Correlates of heroin and methamphetamine use among homeless male ex-jail and prison offenders
Homeless men exiting California State jails and prisons are a heterogeneous community with varied childhood, incarceration and drug use histories. This cross-sectional study assessed whether homeless men who were discharged from either jail or prison into a residential substance abuse treatment program, differed in terms of methamphetamine and heroin use. This study utilized baseline data collected on 540 recently paroled men randomized to one of…

Estimating Labor Trafficking among Unauthorized Migrant Workers in San Diego
Research on labor trafficking faces many methodological challenges, which make it difficult to provide reliable estimates of the problem. In this research, we applied respondent-driven sampling and unique access to migrant communities in San Diego County, California, to estimate the extent of trafficking violations in one of America's largest Spanish-speaking immigrant destinations. We found that 30 percent of undocumented migrant laborers were v…

A Preliminary Examination of Offender Needs Assessment
Criminologists generally agree that offender recidivism can be reduced by addressing the criminogenic needs of this population. Two prominent assessments of offender risks and needs are the Level of Service Inventory-Revised (LSI-R) and the Correctional Offender Management Profiling for Alternative Sanctions (COMPAS). Both predict recidivism, but they are largely based on data from records. In contrast, the determination of inmates' service needs…
Sex trafficking in Latin America
Much has been written in the English-speaking world on the topic of sex trafficking, but little is known about what researchers elsewhere have produced on this topic. An exhaustive literature search was conducted to locate publications on this topic from Latin America. A total of 74 publications were located and put through a systematic content analysis. Four main discernible patterns were noticed: (1) the vast majority of the publications were p…

Enter the Dragon
This paper examines the inner workings of Chinese human smuggling organizations. Contrary to widely held conceptions about Chinese organized crime, most alien smugglers are otherwise ordinary citizens whose familial networks and fortuitous social contacts have enabled them to pool resources to transport human cargoes around the world. They come from diverse backgrounds and form temporary alliances to carry out smuggling operations. With the excep…
Women's Participation in Chinese Transnational Human Smuggling
Despite extensive sociological research on gender and organizations, criminologists have paid insufficient attention to how organizational context and market demands may shape the extent and nature of women's participation in illicit enterprises. This study uses an organizational framework to examine the case of Chinese human smuggling to the United States. Drawing from interviews with 129 human smugglers, we propose a gendered market perspective…

Beyond the ‘Natasha’ story – a review and critique of current research on sex trafficking
A review of literature on sex trafficking since 2000 reveals that numerous articles have been published in scholarly journals but few are based on systematic primary data collection. Much of our current knowledge, including statistical estimates and characteristics of the trafficking business, derives from a handful reports issued by government and non-government agencies. With few empirical studies available, imagination seems to have filled the…
