Marital Property Laws and Women’s Labour Supply

Employment and Job Search Implications of the Extended Weeks and Working While on Claim Pilot Initiatives
We apply a difference-in-differences estimation approach to analyze the effect of two Employment Insurance (EI) program initiatives that took place between 2004 and 2009 in a subset of Canadian Employment Insurance regions. The pilot programs increased the generosity of the EI program in terms of benefit duration and the allowable earnings criterion. The authors analyze how firms of different sizes reward measured skills and unmeasured ability. The empirical methodology, based on nonlinear instrumental variable estimation, permits direct estimation of the returns to unmeasured ability by firm size.
