The CMEA and China during the 1950s
Economic dimensions of the Sino–Soviet alliance and split
In recent years, the Sino–Soviet Alliance of the 1950s and the subsequent split have received increasing attention in research. Most studies, however, focus on (geo)political questions, with the economic side of alliance and split regarded as an appendix. Thus, this special issue turns to the economic dimensions of the Sino–Soviet Alliance and split. The introduction puts the topics of the special issue into the larger context of global post-war …
The China market
Alongside the Soviet Union, partner countries on the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA) substantially contributed to a decade of industrialization in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) during the 1950s. This article looks at East German and Bulgarian industrial projects in China in the realm of the extraction and refinement of basic materials. What was the impact of such exchanges on small CMEA economies as suppliers of industrial go…
The Economy of the Sino-Soviet Alliance
This article examines the research literature on the economic aspects of the “Sino-Soviet Alliance”, which lasted from the end of the Chinese Civil war until the Sino-Soviet split (1949-1960/63). The Soviet and Eastern European contribution to China’s industrialization, called the “largest technology transfer in human history” by some, still awaits detailed examination. This article aims to structure the field as well as inspire future research. …
Chairman Cotton
This article follows Bulgarian officials engaged in cotton and textile exchange with African states in the early Cold War. These officials founded enterprises for carrying out transactions, collected information on prices at international cotton exchanges and attended meetings of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (COMECON) to coordinate trade activities in capitalist markets. Exploring how Bulgarian foreign trade organizations positioned…
Technokratischer Internationalismus
The article examines the international activities of GDR experts for brown coal refinement during the first two decades of the ColdWar. Despite a heritage of National Socialist autarky and the field’s susceptibility to import substitution, these experts’ practices challenge the image of isolationism often ascribed to socialist economic activities. Being active in international organizations and in projects of technology transfer, coal experts pla…
Between East and South
Beyond the Kremlin’s reach? Eastern Europe and China in the Cold War era
This special issue examines relations between the People's Republic of China and socialist Eastern European states during the Cold War. By focusing on transfers and interconnections, and on the social dimension of governmental interactions, our main goal is to explore structures, institutions and spaces of interaction between China and Eastern Europe and their potential autonomy from political conjunctures. The guiding question we raise is: To wh…
China as a role model? The ‘Economic Leap’ campaign in Bulgaria (1958–1960)
The article examines the transnational dimensions of the industrialisation drive in Bulgaria in the late 1950s and poses the question of how extensively this campaign was influenced by the contemporary ‘Great Leap Forward’ in China. Although there is no evidence of comprehensive adoption of a Chinese model, there was widespread enthusiasm for China, and technologies were transferred in connection with the Chinese acceleration policies. These tran…
The Transformation of Soviet Industrial Relations and the Foundation of the Moldovan Dniester Republic
The debate about post-socialist internal conflict has overcome the ‘ethnic turn’ and increasingly focuses on actors. For the case of separatism in the Moldovan Dniester Valley, research has highlighted the crucial role of industrial factory directors. These managers mobilised their factories’ employees. To refine the knowledge of how collective conflict actors are formed, this article asks the question: what enabled directors to mobilise ‘their’ …
