  • Water and sewage systems, socio-demographics, and duration of residence associated with endemic intestinal infectious diseases

Open Access•Kay Teschke, Neil Bellack et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

This large cohort study, with objective data on exposures and outcomes, demonstrated associations between endemic infectious intestinal diseases and factors related to water supply, sewage disposal, socio-demographics, and duration of residency. The results did not always follow prior expectations based on studies examining outbreaks and single systems, and underscore the importance of studying factors associated with endemic disease across water…

  • A late-Holocene (<2600 BP) glacial advance in the south-central Andes (29°S), northern Chile

    Open Access•Martín Grosjean, Mebus A Geyh et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1998•Referências: 3

Radiocarbon dates and relative ages of soils on moraines provide evidence of a substantial late-Holocene (<2600 BP) readvance of glaciers in the western part of the arid Andes at 29°S. The glacier in the Encierro valley, northern Chile, reached about 60% of its late-Pleistocene extent. The equilibrium line altitude ELA during this advance remained between 4250 and 4500 m which is above the modern 0°C isotherm of the free atmosphere during summer.…

  • Mid- and late-Holocene limnogeology of Laguna del Negro Francisco, northern Chile, and its palaeoclimatic implications

    Open Access•Martín Grosjean, Blas L Valero-Garcés et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1997•Citada por: 6•Referências: 2

Lacustrine sediments from the high elevation, endorheic, saline lake Negro Francisco (27°28'S/69°14'W, 4125 m) provide a detailed mid- and late-Holocene environmental history of the Southern Chilean Altiplano. Mineralogy, chemical composition and sedimentary facies analyses of the deposits confirm the regional significance of mid-Holocene aridity between 6000 and 3800 BP. Precipitation rates were signifi cantly lower than the c. 250 mm yr -1 of t…

  • Urbanization and agricultural intensification in the Lower Fraser River valley

    Open Access•KenJ Hall, Hans Schreier•ARTICLE•GeoJournal•1996

  • Climate Change and Natural Resource Dynamics of the Atacama Altiplano during the Last 18,000 Years

Open Access•Bruno Messerli, Martín Grosjean et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•1993

  • Evaluating Mountain Watersheds in Nepal Using Micro-GIS

    Open Access•Hans Schreier, P B Shah et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•1990

Microcomputer-based Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are proving to be a most powerful tool in land resource evaluation. In this paper, examples on how to use this technology are provided for national, district, and watershed evaluation. At the national level a spreadsheet was developed to determine consumption/production balances for food, feed, and fuelwood using the Land Resource Mapping Project (LRMP) and current population growth data as…

  • Reply to Donald Messerschmidt's Commentary

Open Access•Hans Schreier, Pravakar B Shah et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•1985

We welcome the suggestions and comments by Dr. Messerschmidt and we are fully aware that the socio-economic questions have not been addressed in any depth. This can be justified as follows: the aims of the project were to demonstrate to the Nepali planners and government personnel how the national bio-physical resource survey can be interpreted for national land-use planning. We chose the Kailali District to demonstrate some but not all of the la…
