Affect-Cognition Relationships in Adolescent Diaries
The adolescent diary of Anne Frank was examined for evidence of changes in emotional expression (measured by density of categories of emotion), in cognitive level, and in the relation between the two. Increases in emotional density lasting for several days preceded major shifts in cognitive level from an absence of abstract reasoning to absolute, absolute/relativistic, relativistic, and emerging dialectical reasoning. The emotional peaks were ass…
Relativistic and Dialectical Thought in Three Adult Age-Groups
The present study was undertaken to explore age differences in relativistic and dialectical thought, and to determine whether formal operations are necessary but not sufficient for these forms of thought. Sixty young (mean = 19.65 years), middle-aged (mean = 46.15 years), and older (mean = 68.50 years) adults, half of whom were male and half of whom were female, were presented with four formal operational tasks and two life-like dilemmas designed…
Post-Formal Operations? A Need for Further Conceptualization
Several conceptualizations of cognitive development in adulthood have recently been advanced within a Piagetian framework. While each is unique, there are three shared features: (1) the realization of the relativistic, non-absolute nature of knowledge; (2) an acceptance of contradiction, and (3) integration of contradiction into an overriding whole. Formal operational thought shares with Pepper’s [1942] analytic world views the assumptions of ind…
On Missing Links and Such
In this article, based on a symposium presented at the Gerontological Society meeting in 1982, several reconceptualizations of adult cognitive development and its relations with everyday problem-solving are presented. From research showing that older adults have little difficulty remembering sentences involving sudden insight, it is suggested that some age-related differences in remembering reflect a higher criterion for deeper semantic processin…
