  • The Prospective Prediction of Community Violence after Release from Prison with the Risk Screener Violence (RS-V)

Open Access•Marjam V Smeekens, Michiel de Vries Robbé et al.•ARTICLE•The Prison Journal•2025

The prevention of community violence is a key issue for the criminal justice system due to its significant impact on victims and society. Within Dutch prisons, the recently implemented easy-to-use Risk Screener Violence (RS-V) enables the early detection of violent behaviors among incarcerated individuals in support of timely intervention. The current prospective study found sound predictive validity of RS-V's rated by prison staff for violent (r…

  • The Predictive Validity of the Risk Screener Violence (RS-V) for Adults in Prison Regarding Postrelease Violent Recidivism

Open Access•Marjam V Smeekens, Michiel de Vries Robbé et al.•ARTICLE•Criminal Justice and Behavior•2024

Within the prison system, it is often not feasible to administer comprehensive risk assessment for all incarcerated persons because of limited time and resources. To enhance prison safety and facilitate the structured evaluation of concerns about violence risk for all individuals, the Risk Screener Violence (RS-V) was developed. The goal of this study was to evaluate whether the RS-V ( N = 571) is able to retrospectively predict postrelease viole…

  • Interrater and intra-rater reliability of the Vera-2R tool

    Open Access•Nils Duits, Maaike Kempes•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

With this research, we can make more substantiated recommendations on how the VERA-2R can be improved. This could lead to more accurate risk assessments and risk management strategies. However, in order to develop a more reliable and valid VERA-2R instrument, the remaining psychometric properties must also be investigated and published. That will be discussed in a future article

  • Using the Vera-2R, professional and organisational aspects

Open Access•Nils Duits, Carina Overdulve et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

More research on the topic of risk transfer is needed. Policy implications are advised, for example the development of booster trainings, more organizational support, regulations on re-assessments, providing expertise and knowledge to indirect stakeholders and clear writing guidelines

  • Psychopathology of Young Terrorist Offenders, and the Interaction With Ideology and Grievances

Open Access•Nils Duits, Daphne L Alberda et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Psychopathology might be a risk factor for terrorist offending as it is for violent offending. Therefore, we examined the prevalence of psychopathology in young and adult Jihadist terrorist offenders on the basis of primary source judicial information and forensic mental health reports with the European Database of convicted Terrorist offenders (EDT). We hypothesised that psychopathology might be associated with ideological risk factors, and that…

  • Gender Differences in Empathic Sadness towards Persons of the Same- versus Other-sex during Adolescence

    Open Access•Suzannah Stuijfzand, Minet De Wied et al.•ARTICLE•Sex Roles•2016•Citada por: 6•Referências: 3

Although gender differences in affective empathy are well established, evidence of gender differences in the development of affective empathy is inconsistent. Consideration of same-sex versus other-sex affective empathy may assist in elucidating these inconsistencies. Gender differences were investigated in the experience of empathic sadness towards same- versus other-sex targets. The relationships were studied cross-sectionally ( N = 730) and lo…
