  • Unsettling our family history

Madeline Rose Knickerbocker, Hilary Rose et al.•ARTICLE•Settler Colonial Studies•2025

  • The Biad Standards

    Open Access•Samantha Reiter, Robert Staniuk et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 19

This article presents a series of recommendations for the publication of archaeological data, to improve their usability. These 12 recommendations were formulated by archaeological data experts who mined thousands of publications for different data types (including funerary practices, accelerator mass spectrometry dating, stable isotopes, zooarchaeology, archaeobotany and pathologies) during the initial construction of the Big Interdisciplinary A…

  • Dynamic Funerary Monuments of North-western Europe

    Open Access•Hilary A Rose, Stefanie Schaefer-Di Maida et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2024•Referências: 31

This study presents the first extensive radiocarbon dating programme of Bronze Age material from northern Germany, and it combines radiocarbon dates, relative typo-chronological date ranges, and stratigraphic data within a Bayesian chronological framework. We estimate the cemetery complex at Mang de Bargen (Bornhöved, distr. Segeberg, Schleswig-Holstein) to be in use for more than two millennia, which is exceptionally long in northern Germany and…

  • Bayesiansk kronologisk modellering som redskab i den lovpligtige arkæologi

Open Access•Sune Villumsen, Kirstine Haase et al.•ARTICLE•Kuml•2022

Bayesian chronological modelling in Danish archaeologyIn Danish archaeology, radiocarbon dating has become an integrated part of the archaeological toolbox. A certain scepticism towards the accuracy of the method means, however, that it often remains a supplement to archaeological interpretation and other informal dating methods.Bayesian modelling counters this scepticism by combining radiocarbon dating with archaeological observations and other …

  • Radiocarbon dating and Hallstatt chronology

    Open Access•Hilary A Rose, Nils Müller‐scheeßel et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2022•Citada por: 8•Referências: 46

This study is first attempt to refine Early Iron Age absolute chronology, specifically the timing of the Hallstatt C-D transition in southern Germany, using Bayesian chronological modelling of radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates. The Hallstatt period (c.800–450 BC) marks the transition from prehistory to proto-history in Central Europe. The relative chronological framework for Hallstatt burials developed by the mid-twentieth century is still used today, bu…

  • Bayesian Modeling of Wood-Age Offsets in Cremated Bone

    Open Access•Hilary A Rose, John Meadows et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2020•Citada por: 6•Referências: 35

Experimental studies have shown that significant carbon exchange occurs between bone-apatite and the pyre atmosphere during cremation, which can cause a calendar date offset between the radiocarbon ( 14 C) event and the date of cremation. There are limited empirical data available to assess the magnitude of such wood-age offsets, but the aim of this paper is to test if they can be modeled statistically. We present new 14 C dates on modern bone cr…

  • Temporal dynamics of Linearbandkeramik houses and settlements, and their implications for detecting the environmental impact of early farming

    Open Access•John Meadows, Nils Müller‐scheeßel et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2019•Citada por: 8•Referências: 6

Long-held ideas concerning early Neolithic Linearbandkeramik (LBK) settlements in central Europe have been thoroughly challenged in recent years, for example, regarding their internal organisation or the use-life of individual houses. These topics have now also been addressed with the help of large radiocarbon ( 14 C) datasets. In the light of this discussion, we present findings of our ongoing research at Vráble in south-western Slovakia. Intens…

  • Radiocarbon Dating Cremated Bone

    Open Access•Hilary A Rose, John Meadows et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2019•Citada por: 8•Referências: 20

Radiocarbon ( 14 C) results on cremated bone are frequently published in high-ranking journals, but 14 C laboratories employ different pretreatment methods as they have divergent perceptions of what sources of contaminants might be present. We found pretreatment protocols to vary significantly between three laboratories (Brussels [RICH], Kiel [KIA], and Groningen [CIO]), which all have a long history of dating cremated bone. We present a case stu…

  • High-Resolution Dating of a Medieval Multiple Grave

    Open Access•Hilary A Rose, John Meadows et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2018•Referências: 23

Multiple burial in medieval burial grounds are often interpreted as a result of disease, but it is difficult to test such hypotheses, as most acute infectious diseases leave no visible evidence on skeletal material. Scientific dating can potentially associate multiple burials with historically documented epidemics, but the precision required to exclude alternative explanations would normally be attainable only by dendrochronology. Here, we argue …

  • Sexual Identity Confusion and Problem Behaviors in Adolescents

    Hilary Rose, Hilary A Rose et al.•ARTICLE•Marriage & Family Review•2006•Referências: 32

Sexual identity confusion can add to the stress of adolescence. We used gender development, identity formation, and risk/resilience theories to study factors that protect sexually confused youth from risks (e.g., suicidal thoughts, substance use, delinquency). This exploratory study was based on a large, representative sample: 2.4% (n = 299) of students were confused about their sexual identity. From the original sample, a random subsample (n = 2…

  • Risk and Resiliency Factors Among Adolescents Who Experience Marital Transitions

Open Access•Kathleen Boyce Rodgers, Hilary Rose et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2002•Citada por: 16•Referências: 13

Using a resiliency framework, we examined familial and extrafamilial factors associated with adolescent well-being in intact, blended, and divorced single-parent families. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted using a large sample of 7th-, 9th-, and 11th-grade adolescents (N= 2,011) to test the moderating effect of peer support, school attachment, and neighbor support when parental support and monitoring were low. Significant two- and t…

  • Personal, Family, and School Factors Related to Adolescent Academic Performance

Kathleen Boyce Rodgers, Hilary Rose et al.•ARTICLE•Marriage & Family Review•2001•Citada por: 8•Referências: 15

Compared to peers in intact families, adolescents in divorced families do not perform as well academically. Using an ecological framework, we ran hierarchical regressions to examine the effect of parental support and monitoring and school attachment on grade point average (GPA) in teens in intact (60%), single-divorced (20%), and blended (20%) families. In this study, 1925 students in grades 7 (45%), 9 (31%), and 11 (24%), with a mean age of 15 y…
