Depression Literacy and Self-Reported Help-Giving Behaviour in Adolescents in Ireland
This questionnaire-based study aimed to explore depression literacy (DL) and help-giving experiences in 12-18-year-old adolescents (N = 535, M age = 14.9 years, 51.8% male) in Ireland. In response to a vignette depicting a character displaying symptoms of depression, 46.7% labelled these symptoms 'depression', with increasing age and empathy associated with increased likelihood of labelling as such. Almost all (92.1%) believed the character neede…
Parent Education for Responding to and Supporting Youth with Suicidal Thoughts (Persyst)
The gatekeeper training of parents is a promising approach for suicide prevention in young people, but little research has addressed the effectiveness of such training, especially using online delivery. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and acceptability of the delivery of an online suicide prevention training program, LivingWorks Start, to improve the capacity of parents to support young people at risk of suicide. The participants were 1…
A Qualitative Account of Young People’s Experiences Seeking Care from Emergency Departments for Self-Harm
Many young people who engage in self-harm do not seek help from health services. For those that do, emergency departments (EDs) are a key point of contact. In this study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with thirteen young people ( M age = 21.2 years), who were engaged with care at headspace early i…
Working with Young People at Risk of Suicidal Behaviour and Self-Harm
General Practitioners (GPs) play a crucial role in the identification and support of young people at risk of suicidal behaviour and self-harm; however, no studies have explored GPs' perspectives, approaches, challenges, and resource needs when working with this cohort in an Australian setting. This was a qualitative study where fifteen GPs ( M age = 45.25 years) from multiple clinics in Western Australia took part in semi-structured interviews, a…
Parents’ Experience and Psychoeducation Needs When Supporting a Young Person Who Self-Harms
The study highlights the need for support for parents and carers of young people who engage in self-harm, including development and adaptation of resources, such as the "Coping with Self-Harm" booklet, of which an Australian version has now been developed
Mental Health Literacy and Help-Giving Responses in Irish Adolescents
This study assessed mental health literacy in Irish adolescents ( N = 187), and explored participants’ help-giving responses toward hypothetical depressed peers. Participants read five vignettes, each describing an adolescent experiencing a life difficulty; two of the characters met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed., DSM-IV) criteria for depression. The majority of participants could not identify depression or potenti…
