Socioeconomic Inequalities in Diabetes Prevalence in Europe
Diabetes prevalence is steadily increasing in Europe. This study aims to compare diabetes prevalence and the existence of related socioeconomic inequalities between 19 European countries. Using data from The European Social Survey (ESS), there were 31,178 participants (53.06% women) aged 25+ years from Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain,…
Work stress trends in Germany
These findings show that perceived work overload has increased over time in Germany, but mostly regarding work quantity. The study highlights the public health need for managing workload to alleviate stress and enhance health and well-being in the workplace
Gender differences in psychosomatic complaints across occupations and time from 2006 to 2018 in Germany
The study revealed that women experience more psychosomatic distress at work than men in all occupational subgroups and time points. White-collar high-skilled workers showed the highest gender gap in psychosomatic complaints. The gender gap widened from 2005/2006 to 2011/2012 and remained stable from 2011/2012 to 2017/2018. Future research should investigate the reasons and implications of this phenomenon, especially considering the increasing pr…
Better health, but growing social and health inequalities among young adults in Germany due to educational expansion? A counterfactual mediation analysis
Our findings suggest that a high educational attainment is becoming increasingly important for success in the labor market and good SRH. Young adults with a low level of education are becoming a smaller but increasingly vulnerable group, which poses challenges for future prevention
Socioeconomic differences in limited lung function
Thus, overall and severely limited lung function are highly prevalent health conditions. Men and women with a low occupational position and those with low income are the most affected. Socioeconomic indicators cannot be used interchangeably when studying health inequalities in lung functioning. Occupational hazards and physical working conditions are likely to constitute major risks of health inequalities in limited lung functioning and should be…
Type 2 diabetes in the employed population
The study displayed different vulnerability levels among occupational sectors with respect to T2D prevalence overall and for its rising trend among the younger age group. Specific occupations within the vulnerable sectors need to be focused upon in further research to define specific target groups to which T2D prevention interventions should be tailored
The relationship between physical and psychosocial workplace exposures and life expectancy free of musculoskeletal and cardiovascular disease in working life – an analysis based on German health insur…
Employees in occupations with high physical and psychosocial demands constitute vulnerable groups for reduced life expectancy free of MSD and CVD. Given the inequalities and high numbers of disease-affected life years during working age, the prevention potential of occupational health care and workplace health promotion should be used more extensively
Social Inequalities in Loneliness
Loneliness represents a serious health risk. However, studies investigating social inequalities in loneliness are rare. Thus, the current study investigates which socioeconomic groups are the most affected by loneliness. Data from the population-based German Aging Survey were used ( N = 3,784), with participants being 40+ years old. Education, income, and occupational prestige were used as socioeconomic indicators. It was found that loneliness sc…
Socioeconomic inequalities in diabetes prevalence
Diabetes prevalence in Egypt has increased between the years 2008 and 2015 and evident social inequalities were found. Women had more diabetes than men and were more affected with low SES. Unlike women, highly educated men had higher chance of developing diabetes in 2015 compared to 2008. This might be attributed to behavioral and sociocultural factors
Socioeconomic inequalities in diabetes prevalence
Diabetes prevalence increased in South Africa between 2003 and 2016. Main risk factors were age, gender and living in urban areas. Men with high educational level were more at risk of developing diabetes in 2016. Vulnerable groups in 2016 were participants 40 years and older, particularly with high SES. This was followed by younger participants who were obese or overweight
Trends of healthy and unhealthy working life expectancy in Germany between 2001 and 2020 at ages 50 and 60
BACKGROUND: Extending the number of active working years is an important goal both for maintaining individual quality of life and safeguarding social security systems. Against this background, we examined the development of healthy and unhealthy working life expectancy (HWLE/UHWLE) in the general population and for different educational groups. METHODS: The study is based on data from the German Socio-Economic Panel study, including 88 966 women …
Estimating trends in working life expectancy based on health insurance data from Germany – Challenges and advantages
Against the backdrop of population aging and growing strain on pension systems, monitoring the development of Working Life Expectancy (WLE) is vital to assess whether the policies taken are effective. This is the first study investigating time trends and educational inequalities in WLE based on German health insurance data. The analyses are based on the data of the AOK Lower Saxony (N = 3,347,912) covering three time periods (2006-08, 2011-13, an…
Getting Better or Getting Worse? A Population-Based Study on Trends in Self-Rated Health among Single Mothers in Germany between 1994 and 2018
The alarming rise in socioeconomic and health disadvantages among single mothers in Germany shows that action is needed to counter this trend
Self-Efficacy Beliefs of Employees with Mental Disorders or Musculoskeletal Diseases after Sickness-Related Absence
Return-to-work self-efficacy (RTW-SE) is an important predictor of the duration until employees return to work after a sickness-related absence. The aim of the present validation study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the German RTW-SE scale. Data were obtained from three independent samples of employees who were in outpatient care due to mental disorders or musculoskeletal diseases ( n 1 = 301, n 2 = 103, n 3 = 104). Confirmator…
Secular Improvements in Cognitive Aging
Cognitive speed increased in both age groups over historical time. Education, employment, volunteering, routine activities, and health were all important in explaining these changes, but their importance differed between age groups
Trends in Activity Limitations From an International Perspective
Objectives: Examine trends in limitations among young (15-39), middle-aged (40-64) and older age-groups (>=65) and their socioeconomic differences. Methods: Population-based European Social Survey data ( N = 396,853) were used, covering 30 mostly European countries and spanning the time-period 2002-2018. Limitations were measured using a global activity limitations indicator. Results: Age-differential trends in limitations were found. Activity li…
Personal values and mortality
OBJECTIVES: Although personal values guide one's life in several important aspects, no study has examined how personal values relate to mortality. The current study strives to fill this gap. I ask: Which personal values prospectively predict mortality? DESIGN: = 6089). METHODS: Personal values were measured in 2008 according to Schwartz using the Portraits Value Questionnaire. Mortality was monitored up to 2017, resulting in a maximum follow-up p…

Trends and equity in the use of health services in Spain and Germany around austerity in Europe
In both Spain and Germany, service use decreased between 2009 and 2017. In the first few years, this reduction coincided with a period of austerity in Spain. In general, we did not find socioeconomic differences in health service use
Socioeconomic inequalities in type 2 diabetes in employed individuals, nonworking spouses and pensioners
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a rising global epidemic with lower socioeconomic groups being more affected. Considering specific population subgroups to examine prevalence and socioeconomic inequalities in T2D is rare. Moreover, using one indicator to depict socioeconomic inequalities in health is a common practice despite evidence on differences in what different socioeconomic indicators ought to measure. This study has two aims: 1. Examine the preva…
Trends in self-rated health among the elderly population in Germany from 1995 to 2015 – the influence of temporal change in leisure time physical activity
The increase of regular LTPA accounted for improved SRH from 1995 to 2015 among the elderly, indicating that promoting LTPA might be a key factor to raise healthy working life expectancy
Are Disability Rates among People with Diabetes Increasing in Germany? A Decomposition Analysis of Temporal Change between 2004 and 2015
Objectives: We investigated changes in the prevalence of disabilities among individuals with type 2 diabetes and analyzed the contribution of comorbidities on this change. Methods: Data were drawn from the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). We estimated predicted probabilities of impaired (instrumental) activities of daily living (IADL and ADL) by means of logistic regression. Multivariate decomposition was employed for a…
Loneliness and Health
Objectives: The adverse health effects of loneliness are well documented, but less is known about cultural moderators of this relationship. Contributing to the literature, we examined whether cross-cultural differences in individualism moderate the effect of loneliness on health. Methods: We used population-based longitudinal data of 14 countries ( N = 40,797), as provided by the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe data. Multilevel…
Religiosity and perceived religious discrimination as predictors of support for suicide attacks among Muslim Americans
Xenophobia trends in Germany
Xenophobia denotes prejudice towards those perceived as foreign. I examined trends in xenophobia according to age, time period, and birth cohort, using population-based data of Germans (ALLBUS, N = 20,023), aged 18 to 97 years, spanning a time period from 1996–2016. I found that xenophobia increased strongly with age and decreased, to a lesser extent, over time periods. Additionally, there were robust U-shaped birth cohort effects, such that youn…

Disentangling Loneliness
Different measures of social disconnectedness have differential effects on health. Therefore, using only global measures or one aspect of social disconnectedness might obfuscate potential health hazards. Researchers and practitioners should be mindful of differences between these measures and should include multiple aspects of social disconnectedness in their research and practice. Future studies should explore the causes why these measures and t…

Dimensional Latent Structure of Relationship Quality
A fundamental question facing every latent construct (e.g., relationship quality) is whether the construct is categorical or dimensional in nature. The authors analyzed the latent status of relationship quality in 3 large general German population samples using the Partnership Questionnaire (PFB), the Quality of Relationship Inventory, and the short form of the PFB (PFB-K; N1 = 1,330, N2 = 1,494, N3 = 1,390). They applied 3 widely used taxometric…

A Rasch Re-Analysis of the Partnership Questionnaire
The Partnership Questionnaire (PFB) is used favorably in the German language area to measure partnership quality. The goal of the present study is to re-analyze the subscales of the PFB ( Conflict Behavior, Tenderness, Communication) via the Rasch model. Polytomous and dichotomous Rasch models were calculated in a population sample ( N = 1,123) and a student-based cross-validation sample ( N = 250) for the three subscales of the PFB. Final models…

Trends in grip strength
Grip strength is seen as an objective indicator of morbidity and disability. However, empirical knowledge about trends in grip strength remains incomplete. As trends can occur due to effects of aging, time periods and birth cohorts, we used hierarchical age-period-cohort models to estimate and disentangle putative changes in grip strength. To do this, we used population-based data of older adults, aged 50 years and older, from Germany, Sweden, an…
Fruit and vegetable consumption is associated with improved mental and cognitive health in older adults from non-Western developing countries
Objectives Consumption of fruits and vegetables has been shown to contribute to mental and cognitive health in older adults from Western industrialized countries. However, it is unclear whether this effect replicates in older adults from non-Western developing countries. Thus, the present study examined the contribution of fruit and vegetable consumption to mental and cognitive health in older persons from China, India, Mexico, Russia, South Afri…
