Bridging Sacred Tradition and Secular Aspiration: Cultural Capital in Bar/Bat Mitzvah Rituals
This study examines how a Jewish coming-of-age ritual—the bar/bat mitzvah—serves as a point of intersection between sacred practices and secular aspirations. Drawing on a multi-sited ethnography of seven families from non-Orthodox congregations in Silicon Valley, the research highlights how the bar/bat mitzvah serves both as a religious milestone and as a structured rehearsal for adulthood. Through participant observation, in-depth interviews, an…
Live Davenings: Technologies of Ritual Learning and the Convening of a Jewish Sacred Music Underground
Surreptitiously collected field recordings of cantors at the pulpit, made in disregard for the rules of synagogue comportment, circulated for decades among a small group of collectors in an underground economy of homemade dubbed cassettes. These secret recordings, referred to as "live davenings," usurp the characteristic ephemerality of prayer to document a twentieth century aesthetic concept of cantorial music as an art form beyond its ritual fu…
‘I’m actually shocked of how rude you are!’ Communication challenges in webchat-based customer service
Computer-mediated webchat is fast replacing voice support in customer service. Whilst previous studies have explored how communication breaks down in customer service voice exchange in off-shored/outsourced multinational companies; studies into webchat exchange in the same industries are scarce. Given the high stakes of customer service interactions – for example customer satisfaction, return intention and loyalty to the company – there is an urg…

The design of a webchat assessment framework for contact centres in Asia
In the global contact centre industry, workplaces are rapidly replacing phone customer support with written webchat exchange. This means that webchat agents use their computers, phones and other mobile devices to communicate synchronously through texting, when serving customers. As with voice assessments in the previous decade, there has been an urgent need for webchat communications assessment solutions in the outsourced and offshored sites in C…

From Aesthetics to Experience: How Changing Conceptions of Prayer Changed the Sound of Jewish Worship
This article tracks changes in conceptions of American Jewish congregational prayer music during the second half of the twentieth century, paying specific attention to the late 1960s and early 1970s. During those years, more than fifty albums of new American Jewish synagogue music were released. These drew on the sounds of folk and rock music, and they represented a shift from the sounds of classical cantorial synagogue music. These changes have …
Virtual team management: What is causing communication breakdown
The combined effects of business offshoring, of flexible work practices and of rapid improvements in technology have resulted in workplace virtual communication becoming increasingly prevalent for business meetings. However, business leaders report them to be more challenging than face-to-face ones. Most global teams are located where diverse offshored work teams are using English as a lingua franca, and despite common business complaints that th…
International communication in a technology services call centre in India
The data for this study was gathered from a US multinational company information technology enabled services (ITES) worksite offshored to India. The focus of the study is the exploration of the nature of English communication between professional support engineers across ‘Inner, Outer and Expanding Circles,’ and in particular the use of accommodation strategies used by the support engineers in the process of getting their professional work done o…
Assessment of Business and Professional Language for Specific Purposes
The use of English in international worksites and across business and professions has grown rapidly since the 1980s. Multinational companies doing business worldwide need to communicate and negotiate with each other; global professionals need to build knowledge together across linguistic and cultural boundaries; governments and NGOs need to keep the peace and help build developing countries; and immigrants with professional and occupational aspir…
