Tireless wayfarer… To the 75th anniversary of A.A. Maslennikov
A Youth With a Polecat From the Medieval Minino Cemetery at the Kubenskoe Lake
The Medieval Cemetery of Gnezdilovo

Stratigraphy of the Cultural Layer of the Moscow Kremlin
In 2019–2021, the Institute of Archaeology RAS conducted excavations in the Great Garden of the Moscow Kremlin, east of the Archangel Cathedral, where the buildings of Prikazes (central administrative bodies of the Russian state) were located in the 16th–17th centuries AD. In the deposits, whose total thickness reached 6 m, it was possible to identify several layers, a part of which contained debris from the construction of the buildings of the O…
Estates of the Moscow Nobility of the 14th–15th Centuries in the Podol (Lower Area) of the Moscow Kremlin
The article provides a preliminary general description of the results of archaeological studies in wet cultural layers in the Tainitsky Garden of the Moscow Kremlin in 2020. The materials collected during the excavations are of exceptional interest for studying the stratigraphy and chronology of cultural deposits in Podol (lower) area and provide a rare opportunity (for the case of the Kremlin) of dating individual structures dendrochronologicall…

First Results of New Studies of the Gnezdilovo Cemetery Near Suzdal

Molecular genetic sex determination of Medieval human remains from North Russia
Sex determination presents a difficult problem in archaeology and anthropology in cases of fragmentary or juvenile remains, and where grave goods are absent. Here, a molecular genetic analysis of the sex of human remain from the Early Medieval cemetery at Nefedievo, North Russia, was carried out and the results were compared with archaeological and anthropological data. Teeth without cavities (15 samples) and bones (9 samples) were used as the an…
Eastern” ornaments of the 11th‐13th centuries in the Sami areas
Ornaments of east‐European origin found at Viking Age and Early Medieval sites in northern Scandinavia have been analysed by many Scandinavian scholars. In the Scandinavian context, the presence of these import items has given rise to many theories concerning inter‐ethnic relations and the function of these ornaments as markers of ethnicity. In this paper, the Soviet scholar N. A. Makarov offers an analyses of where these “eastern” ornaments coul…
