Objective Disputes over election fraud have become a defining feature of contemporary American politics, yet it remains unclear whether partisans are disagreeing about the same underlying phenomenon. This article examines how Americans understand and interpret the phrase “election fraud” and whether partisan divisions reflect differences in concern about fraud or differences in what the term itself is taken to mean. Methods We use novel survey qu…

    Open Access•Nicholas Kerr, Bridgett A King et al.•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•2024•Citada por: 7•Referências: 63

This article introduces a special issue on trust in elections. While the number of electoral democracies has grown globally, we are currently experiencing a crisis of electoral trust. Political polarization, social divisions, and the rapid spread of misinformation have all been related to enhanced widespread skepticism about the quality of national elections. The special issue is focused on two central questions: How can we explain variations in …

  • Public Administration, Civil Society, & Democracy

    Bridgett A King, Kelly Krawczyk•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Policy…•2023•Referências: 13

In an increasingly global society, public administration and public policy students must be equipped to respond to policy issues in culturally and contextually appropriate ways. This paper presents an experiential learning method for achieving these goals. The special topics course Public Adminis…

  • Redistricting and Incarceration

    Open Access•Ryan D Williamson, Bridgett A King•ARTICLE•State Politics & Policy Quarterly•2022•Citada por: 2•Referências: 24

During the most recent round of redistricting, many states have enacted a number of reforms to their mapmaking practices. One reform that has received increased attention in recent years is a ban on prison gerrymandering—the practice of counting incarcerated individuals in prisons instead of their home addresses. Eleven states drew districts while counting incarcerated persons in their homes after the 2020 Census. Though substantial research has …

  • Waiting to vote

    Bridgett A King•ARTICLE•Policy Studies•2020•Citada por: 8•Referências: 28

When citizens experience an irregularity while voting, their confidence in elections is diminished, and they are more likely to perceive the results of the election as illegitimate. Although there are many irregularities that a voter may experience, this article evaluates the consequence of extensive wait times to vote on citizen confidence in the United States. Utilizing the 2008–2016 Survey on the Performance of American Elections (SPAE) the an…

State online voting and registration lookup tools that allow voters to check their voter registration status, confirm their polling location, review a sample ballot, and check the status of an absentee or provisional ballot reduce the cost of information acquisition and service completion while providing voters with the information necessary to participate in the democratic process. The analysis evaluates the relationship between state voting and…

  • Disenfranchising the Enfranchised

Open Access•Bridgett A King, Laura Erickson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Studies•2016

Felony disenfranchisement is the removal of the right to vote following a felony conviction. Although it is clear that felony disenfranchisement constitutes diminished political capacity for citizens with felony convictions, what is not clear is the extent to which disenfranchisement reduces participation among those who are eligible to vote; particularly among African Americans who are overrepresented in the disenfranchised citizen population. I…

Open Access•Caroline Tolbert, Karen Mossberger et al.•ARTICLE•Information Technologies and…•2008

Although the gender gap online has narrowed in the United States, little research on technology access and use has examined the different experiences of women-particularly the interaction between gender, race/ethnicity, and poverty. Using the most recent comprehensive survey of technology use and access, the 2003 Current Population Survey, we find new evidence of diminishing gender disparities overall, differences between African-American women a…
