The impact of Covid-19 on the treatment of opioid use disorder in carceral facilities
While the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted healthcare delivery everywhere, persons with carceral system involvement and opioid use disorder (OUD) were disproportionately impacted and vulnerable to severe COVID-associated illness. Carceral settings and community treatment programs (CTPs) rapidly developed protocols to sustain healthcare delivery while reducing risk of COVID-19 transmission. This survey study assessed changes to OUD treatment, telemedic…
Personal Control Over Decisions to Participate in Research by Persons With Histories of Both Substance Use Disorders and Criminal Justice Supervision
Individuals must feel free to exert personal control over decisions regarding research participation. We present an examination of participants' perceived personal control over, as well as reported pressures and threats from others, influencing their decision to join a study assessing the effectiveness of extended-release naltrexone in preventing opioid dependence relapse. Most participants endorsed a strong sense of control over the decision; fe…
Acceptability and effectiveness of a web-based psychosocial intervention among criminal justice involved adults
BACKGROUND: The acceptability, feasibility and effectiveness of web-based interventions among criminal justice involved populations are understudied. This study is a secondary analysis of baseline characteristics associated with criminal justice system (CJS) status as treatment outcome moderators among participants enrolling in a large randomized trial of a web-based psychosocial intervention (Therapeutic Education System [TES]) as part of outpat…
Developing sport-based after-school programmes using a participatory action research approach
This paper is based on a three-year research programme, the overall purpose of which was to develop, implement and evaluate sport-based after-school programmes for students in low-income areas of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In addition to presenting the results of this study, the other purpose of this paper was to provide an empirical example of participatory action research, depicting when and how community partners were engaged in the research p…
Community-based educational intervention to limit the dissemination of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureusin Northern Saskatchewan, Canada
These educational materials are all freely available http://www.narp.ca and will hopefully aid in increasing awareness of the importance of proper antimicrobial usage and hygiene in diminishing the spread of S. aureus and other infectious diseases in other communities
Analyzing and Integrating Dependency Parsers
There has been a rapid increase in the volume of research on data-driven dependency parsers in the past five years. This increase has been driven by the availability of treebanks in a wide variety of languages—due in large part to the CoNLL shared tasks—as well as the straightforward mechanisms by which dependency theories of syntax can encode complex phenomena in free word order languages. In this article, our aim is to take a step back and anal…
Constrained Arc-Eager Dependency Parsing
Arc-eager dependency parsers process sentences in a single left-to-right pass over the input and have linear time complexity with greedy decoding or beam search. We show how such parsers can be constrained to respect two different types of conditions on the output dependency graph: span constraints, which require certain spans to correspond to subtrees of the graph, and arc constraints, which require certain arcs to be present in the graph. The c…
