  • Citizens’ opinions on (non-)essential uses of persistent chemicals

    Open Access•Annika K Karinen, Hilde Tobi et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 3

In accordance with the European Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability towards a Toxic-free Environment, the European Commission plans to phase out persistent chemicals, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), except for uses classified essential for society. Until now, empirical research on what is considered an essential or non-essential chemical use has been lacking. Furthermore, as such criteria are bound to be subjective, differe…

  • Citizen Science for public health

Open Access•Lea den Broeder, Jeroen Devilee et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2016

Community engagement in public health policy is easier said than done. One reason is that public health policy is produced in a complex process resulting in policies that may appear not to link up to citizen perspectives. We therefore address the central question as to whether citizen engagement in knowledge production could enable inclusive health policy making. Building on non-health work fields, we describe different types of citizen engagemen…

  • Citizen science on a smartphone

    Open Access•Anne M Land‐Zandstra, Anne M Land-Zandstra et al.•ARTICLE•Public Understanding of Science•2016

Citizen science provides researchers means to gather or analyse large datasets. At the same time, citizen science projects offer an opportunity for non-scientists to be part of and learn from the scientific process. In the Dutch iSPEX project, a large number of citizens turned their smartphones into actual measurement devices to measure aerosols. This study examined participants’ motivation and perceived learning impacts of this unique project. M…

  • Roles of scientists as policy advisers on complex issues

Open Access•Pita Spruijt, Anne Knol et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2014

Policymakers frequently encounter complex issues, and the role of scientists as policy advisers on these issues is not always clearly defined. We present an overview of the interdisciplinary literature on the roles of scientific experts when advising policymakers on complex issues, and in particular on the factors that influence these roles. A structured literature search was combined with literature found in reference lists of peer reviewed pape…

  • Can a pre-assessment help us to properly manage controversial risks of chemicals? A discussion on potential improvement of the Reach restriction process

Jeroen Devilee, Julia Verhoeven et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2014•Citada por: 1

The REACH regulation has been adopted to regulate the safe use of chemicals in Europe. One of the instruments of this regulation is the restriction of chemicals that cause unacceptable risks. A Member State can prepare a dossier to propose the restriction of the placing on the market or use of a substance. Up to now, seven restriction proposals have been evaluated, based primarily on the best scientific information available (predominantly on the…

  • Stakeholder Value Orientations in Water Management

    Pim Vugteveen, H J R Lenders et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2010•Citada por: 12•Referências: 5

Current water management issues are characterized by factual uncertainty, relating to limits of scientific knowledge, and value uncertainty, relating to the policy process of making subjective choices. Developing and informing approaches for integrated water management (IWM) requires bringing facts and values together. This study examines the way value orientations differentiate themselves among IWM stakeholders and assesses implications for the …
