  • Empowerment and gender dynamics in the post-production process for rice in Eastern Uganda

Open Access•Augustine Oloo, Rosemary E Isoto et al.•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2026

Using data collected from 515 downstream rice value chain agents in Eastern Uganda, we analyse gendered participation and its effect on empowerment. We apply a probit model and an endogenous treatment effects model to assess participation in milled rice trading and its causal effect on empowerment. Results show that men dominate the downstream nodes of the rice value chain, and time spent on reproductive activities reduces the probability of wome…

  • Participation in Downstream Nodes of the Rice Value Chain in Uganda

Open Access•Gaudiose Mujawamariya, Thelma Akongo et al.•ARTICLE•Agenda•2025•Referências: 5

  • Estimating oligopsonistic market power in Uganda’s rice industry

    Open Access•Edgar E Twine, Stella E Adur-Okello et al.•ARTICLE•Agrekon•2023

The study applies the conjectural variations approach to determine whether Ugandan rice traders exercise oligopsony power in the market for domestic rice. The trader margin for milled rice is found to be 10.20% on average. Using an econometric system of four equations, the null hypothesis of competitive behaviour holds at different price elasticities of farm supply, ranging from inelastic to elastic supply. This implies that there is no evidence …

  • Consumer preferences for rice in East Africa

Open Access•Edgar E Twine, Sali Atanga Ndindeng et al.•ARTICLE•British Food Journal•2023

Purpose Improving the competitiveness of East Africa's rice industries necessitates increased and viable production of rice of the quality desired by consumers. This paper aims to understand consumer preferences for rice quality attributes in Uganda and Kenya to inform the countries' rice breeding programs and value chain development interventions. Design/methodology/approach Rice samples are obtained from retail markets in various districts/coun…

  • Targeting millers to improve rice marketing in Uganda

    Open Access•Edgar E Twine, Stella Everline Adur-Okello et al.•ARTICLE•British Food Journal•2021

Purpose Improving milling quality is expected to improve the quality of domestic rice and hence the competitiveness of Uganda's rice industry. Therefore, this study aims to assess the determinants of four aspects of milling, namely, choice of milling technology, millers' perceptions of the importance of paddy quality attributes, milling return and milling capacity. Design/methodology/approach Multinomial logit, semi-nonparametric extended ordered…

  • Using "theory of change" to improve agricultural research

    Open Access•Amos Omore, Amos O Omore et al.•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2019•Referências: 11

Demonstrating how agricultural research contributes to development outcomes is difficult but necessary given competing demands for scarce resources. This article summarises an adaptation of the “theory of change” approach and lessons derived from its application to improve the design and implementation of an agricultural research for development programme for greater impact. It was applied to Maziwa Zaidi, a programme that tested integrated inter…

  • Are Technology Adoption and Collective Action Important in Accessing Credit? Evidence from Milk Producers in Tanzania

    Open Access•Edgar E Twine, E J O Rao et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Development…•2018•Citada por: 1•Referências: 17

One of the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 2 is to double agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers through, among other things, improving access to financial services including credit. However, designing appropriate mechanisms for increasing access to credit by poor households remains a challenge, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. This paper argues that technology adoption and collective action could provide pat…
