  • Satellite data reveals a recent increase in shifting cultivation and associated carbon emissions in Laos

Open Access•Shijuan Chen, Curtis E Woodcock et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Although shifting cultivation is the major land use type in Laos, the spatial-temporal patterns and the associated carbon emissions of shifting cultivation in Laos are largely unknown. This study provides a nationwide analysis of the spatial-temporal patterns of shifting cultivation and estimations of the associated carbon emissions in Laos over the last three decades. This study found that shifting cultivation has been expanding and intensifying…

  • Exploring natural and social drivers of forest degradation in post-Soviet Georgia

Open Access•Owen Cortner, Shijuan Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2023•Referências: 6

The Caucasus Mountains harbor high concentrations of endemic species and provide an abundance of ecosystem services yet are significantly understudied compared to other ecosystems in Eurasia. In the country of Georgia, at the heart of the Caucasus region, forest degradation has been the largest land change process over the last thirty years. The prevailing narrative is that legal and illegal cutting of trees for fuelwood is primarily responsible …

  • Time series analysis of satellite data reveals continuous deforestation of New England since the 1980s

Open Access•Pontus Olofsson, Christopher E Holden et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

Land cover and land change were monitored continuously between 1985 and 2011 at 30 m resolution across New England in the Northeastern United States in support of modeling the terrestrial carbon budget. It was found that the forest area has been decreasing throughout the study period in each state of the region since the 1980s. A total of 386 65798 137 ha (95% confidence interval) of forest has been converted to other land covers since 1985. Main…

  • Good practices for estimating area and assessing accuracy of land change

    Open Access•Pontus Olofsson, G M Foody et al.•ARTICLE•Remote Sensing of Environment•2014

  • Making better use of accuracy data in land change studies

    Open Access•Pontus Olofsson, G M Foody et al.•ARTICLE•Remote Sensing of Environment•2013

  • Carbon implications of forest restitution in post-socialist Romania

Open Access•Pontus Olofsson, Tobias Kuemmerle et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2011

The collapse of socialism in 1989 triggered a phase of institutional restructuring in Central and Eastern Europe. Several countries chose to privatize forests or to return them to pre-socialist owners. Here, we assess the implications of forest restitution on the terrestrial \nThe collapse of socialism in 1989 triggered a phase of institutional restructuring in Central and Eastern Europe.
