Assessing the land-use harmonization (LUH) 2 dataset in Central Asia for regional climate model projection
Although the land-use harmonization (LUH) datasets have been widely applied in regional climate model (RCM) projections for investigating the role of the land-use forcing in future climate changes, few studies have thoroughly assessed them on local scale, which may bring large uncertainties in the resultant climate information for designing adaption and mitigation measures of climate change. The authors use a local land-use dataset (referred to a…
Changes in regional wet heatwave in Eurasia during summer (1979–2017)
Wet heatwaves can have more impact on human health than hot dry heatwaves. However, changes in these have received little scientific attention. Using the ECMWF Reanalysis v5 reanalysis dataset, wet-bulb temperatures ( T w ) were used to investigate the spatial-temporal variation of wet heatwaves in Eurasia for 1979–2017. Wet heatwaves were defined as three day or longer periods when T w was above the 90th percentile of the summer distribution and…
Influence of Pacific Decadal Oscillation on global precipitation extremes
While the influence of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) on precipitation has been extensively studied, its influence on precipitation extremes remains not well-known. Based on a series of generalized extreme value modeling experiments, this paper demonstrates some distinct regional patterns of the PDO’s influence on precipitation extremes worldwide. In eastern China, the well-known ‘southern flood (drought) and northern drought (flood)’ patt…
An analysis of the urbanization contribution to observed terrestrial stilling in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region of China
Decreases in terrestrial near-surface wind speed ( NSWS ) were documented in many regions over the past decades. Various drivers have been proposed for this terrestrial stilling, such as weakening of ocean-land pressure gradients related to climate change and increased surface roughness linked to vegetation growth; but none have been robustly established as the cause. A plausible reason for this quandary is that the local impact of urbanization o…
Climate variability or anthropogenic emissions
Beijing Haze has been phenomenal, especially for winter, and widely considered a result of the increasing anthropogenic emissions of atmospheric pollutants in the region. Since 2013, the pollutant emissions have been reduced with the help of a series of emission-control actions. However, severe haze events still occurred frequently in Beijing in recent winters, e.g., those of 2015 and 2016, implying that other factors such as meteorological condi…
Diminishing clear winter skies in Beijing towards a possible future
Severe haze during the winter season has been troubling the citizens of Beijing over the past few decades, and the trend seems to be continuing. However, occasionally such as the winter of 2017 (2017/12–2018/2), one would be amazed to see unusually few hazy days throughout the winter that brings memories of a long past. It is controversial to say whether such a nowadays-rare event is a result of policy-driven emission cuts or an opportunity broug…
Climatic warming in China during 1901–2015 based on an extended dataset of instrumental temperature records
Monthly mean instrumental surface air temperature (SAT) observations back to the nineteenth century in Ch ina are synthesized fro m different sources via specific quality-control, interpolation, and homogenizat ion. Co mpared with the first homogenized long-term SAT dataset for China by Cao et al. (2013), wh ich contained 18 stations mainly located in the middle and eastern part of China, the present dataset includes homogenized monthly SAT serie…
Have human activities changed the frequencies of absolute extreme temperatures in eastern China
Extreme temperatures affect populous regions, like eastern China, causing substantial socio-economic losses. It is beneficial to explore whether the frequencies of absolute or threshold-based extreme temperatures have been changed by human activities, such as anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs). In this study, we compared observed and multi-model-simulated changes in the frequencies of summer days, tropical nights, icy days and fro…
Climatic variations in western Europe and China, AD 1645-1715
Instrumental and proxy data series from historical archives are compared over the period of the Maunder Minimum (AD 1645-1715) for western Europe (central England, Paris and Switzerland) and China. Winters became colder and drier over the late seventeenth century in western Europe. In China, however, winters were coldest around AD 1650 and became warmer and stormier over the subsequent decades. A significant warming of winters is observed around …
