  • Feminist Anthropology Anew

    Open Access•Pamela J Downe, Pamela Downe•ARTICLE•Anthropology in Action•2011

Ongoing discussions about feminist anthropology as an active and relevant sub-discipline largely rely on historical comparisons that pit the political fervour of the past against what is deemed to be the less defined and increasingly disengaged feminist anthropology of today. In this paper, I argue that the prevailing tone of pessimism surrounding feminist anthropology should be met with a critical response that: (1) situates the current characte…

  • Feminist Anthropology Confronts Disengagement

Open Access•Robin Whitaker, Pamela J Downe et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropology in Action•2011

Feminist ethnography was a hot topic at anthropology conferences in the 1980s and 1990s. As students, we remember meeting rooms so packed that people crowded in the doorways, straining to hear energetic debates over the negotiation of power, the embodiment of systemic and structural violence, the possibilities for combining scholarship and political activism, and issues of identity and difference – not least the dangers of imposing an ethnocentri…

  • Strategic Stories and Reflexive Interruptions

    Open Access•Pamela J Downe, Pamela Downe•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2007•Citada por: 1•Referências: 15

This article presents a narrative that emerged during research with 12 young women involved in cross-border sex work in the eastern Caribbean. This narrative draws on a locally specific historical reference and allows the young women to construct a notion of a "healthy home" amidst the uprootedness, frequent travel, and violence and risk that they face in their work. Drawing on Bruno Latour's constructivist notion of reflexivity, the framing of t…

    Open Access•Pamela J Downe, Pamela Downe•ARTICLE•Anthropologica•2001•Citada por: 7

Children have long been present in anthropologi cal research but rarely does their involvement receive the criti cal attention that is given to adult participants. This paper examines what is revealed about the construction of identities of self when the research-related play of two girls in quite dif ferent ethnographic contexts is examined. Drawing on research in Bridgetown, Barbados, and Saskatoon, Canada, it is argued that through the playful…

  • Participant Advocacy and Research with Prostitutes in Costa Rica

    Pamela J Downe•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•1999

In 1992-3, I conducted research with 53 street prostitutes in San José Costa Rica. The goal of this research, as I describe below, was to determine how these women use biomedical concepts of contagion to explain the healthrelated conditions that posed the greatest threat to their daily lives. Although I always intended the results of this study to be relevant to the participants, I never expected that these women would embrace the research as fer…
