A process for developing a sustainable and scalable approach to community engagement
This study demonstrates the value of ensuring that a range of stakeholders co-produce the intervention, and ensuring that the intervention is designed to be appropriate for the health system, community and cultural context
Death is a better option than being treated like this”
Patients with multi-drug resistant tuberculosis are at high risk of depression, particularly those with co- and multi-morbidities. Screening for depression and psycho-social support should be integrated within routine TB services and provided throughout treatment
Climate museums
Innovative museums dedicated to climate change have opened over the past decade. At the same time, increasing numbers of established museums are rethinking their missions and activities to refocus on care of nature and its people, using diverse approaches and methods. While the museum sector has only recently started to draw together in more interlaced conversations about shared goals in the face of the climate crisis, there is nevertheless a not…
Partnering with Private Providers to Promote Long-Acting Contraceptives in Urban Bangladesh
CONTEXT: Bangladesh's pluralistic health system has diversified opportunities for clients to obtain family planning, but public-private partnerships could improve access to services, particularly in urban areas. METHOD: Sixteen providers, clients and program managers were interviewed to assess perspectives on a family planning orientation and demand-side financing referral program tested in Mirpur, Bangladesh. The 15-month program, conducted in 2…

"Who Will Marry a Diseased Girl?" Marriage, Gender, and Tuberculosis Stigma in Asia
In a qualitative study on the stigma associated with tuberculosis (TB), involving 73 interviews and eight focus groups conducted in five sites across three countries (Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan), participants spoke of TB's negative impact on the marriage prospects of women in particular. Combining the approach to discovering grounded theory with a conceptualization of causality based on a realist ontology, we developed a theory to explain th…
Patients’ perspectives of care for type 2 diabetes in Bangladesh –a qualitative study
Effective, appropriate and essential healthcare services for diabetes in Bangladesh is extremely limited, a majority of patients receive suboptimal care. Site of diagnosis will impact significantly on the quality of information provided and the quality of subsequent treatments. Although appropriate services are available at some specialist centres, the inability of patients to pay for routine tests and check-ups prevents them from receiving timel…
The importance of providing counselling and financial support to patients receiving treatment for multi-drug resistant TB
MDR-TB patients are extremely vulnerable to stigma and extreme financial hardship. Provision of counselling and financial support may not only reduce their vulnerability, but also increase cure rates. National Tuberculosis Programmes should consider incorporating financial support and counselling into MDR-TB care: costs are low, and benefits high, especially since costs to society of incomplete treatment and potential for incurable TB are extreme…
Old objects, new media
Digital resources mobilized by museums, archives and other cultural heritage institutions are opening up collections and vistas onto the past from an increasing variety of perspectives. Digitization is enabling the juxtaposition of material from far-flung repositories and creating new ways of presenting historical insights as well as new types of historical engagements. New media can allow the assemblage of a multiplicity of voices, accounts, son…
Evaluating the impact of decentralising tuberculosis microscopy services to rural township hospitals in gansu province, china
Microscopy centre throughputs were generally low in Gansu Province, and the contribution of MCs to TB case detection was insignificant taking account the number of MCs established. As a unique case of full decentralisation of TB service, Ganzhou County presented better results. However, standards and quality of TB care needed to be improved. The MC policy needs to be reviewed in light of evidence from this study
Tanzanian farmers' knowledge and attitudes to GM biotechnology and the potential use of GM crops to provide improved levels of food security. A Qualitative Study
This study forms a basis from which further research work can be undertaken. It is important to continue to assess opinions and attitudes of farmers and consumers in sub Saharan Africa towards potential use of GM technologies whilst highlighting the importance of the relationship between agriculture, health and development. This will allow people in the region to make accurate, informed decisions about whether they believe use of GM biotechnology…
Cost implications of delays to tuberculosis diagnosis among pulmonary tuberculosis patients in Ethiopia
The costs of tuberculosis diagnosis incurred by patients and escorts represent a significant portion of their monthly income. The costs arising from time lost in seeking care comprised a major portion of the total cost of diagnosis, and may worsen the economic position of patients and their families. Getting treatment from alternative sources and low index of suspicion public health providers were key problems contributing to increased cost of tu…
Improving tuberculosis care in low income countries – a qualitative study of patients' understanding of "patient support" in Nepal
In order to support people with TB more during their treatment, health policy and practice must appreciate that TB affects all aspects of TB patients' lives. A focus on caring for each patient as an individual should underlie all aspects of treatment. Improved communication between healthcare providers and patients and increased patient knowledge and understanding of the treatment programme would give those receiving treatment a sense of individu…
Delayed consultation among pulmonary tuberculosis patients
Nearly half of pulmonary tuberculosis patients delayed seeking health care at a public health facility while getting treatment from informal sources. The involvement of religious institutions and private practitioners in early referral of patients with pulmonary symptoms and creating public awareness about tuberculosis could help reduce delays in starting modern treatment
Quality of tuberculosis care and its association with patient adherence to treatment in eight Ethiopian districts
BACKGROUND: Little is known about the quality of tuberculosis (TB) service delivery in public health facilities in Ethiopia and its association with patients' non-adherence to TB treatment. This study assessed the organization, management and processes of TB care delivery, and their effects on patients' adherence to TB treatment. METHODS: The quality of TB care was investigated in 44 public health facilities from three perspectives: structure, pr…
Costs of a successful public-private partnership for TB control in an urban setting in Nepal
Treating TB patients in the PPP scheme had a low additional cost, while doubling the case notification rate and maintaining a high success rate. Costs incurred by patients and their escorts were the largest contributors to the overall total. This suggests a focus for follow-up studies and for cost-minimisation strategies
Causes of stigma and discrimination associated with tuberculosis in Nepal
A comprehensive package of interventions, tailored to the local context, will be needed to address the multiple causes of discrimination identified: basic population-wide health education is unlikely to be effective
Government–NGO collaboration
This study analyzes the basic concepts and key issues of existing collaboration between government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in health care, using as an example the implementation of the DOTS (formerly an abbreviation for directly observed treatment, short course) strategy for tuberculosis (TB) control in Bangladesh. It also examines efforts by the Government of Bangladesh to improve health services delivery, especially for the po…
