A literary character as a humorous meme
The article analyzes the phenomenon of a unique meme-literary character that appeared simultaneously with ChatGPT. This meme is a striking example of a floating signifier (Buchanan 2010) arising from mixed discourses. This is the Shoggoth meme, which was created based on a fantastic monster from the novels of Howard Lovecraft, and in our time has turned into a humorous picture with a smiley. The seriousness of “Lovecraftian horrors” as an element…
Semiotics and Mythology in the Works of Michel Tournier
The article highlights the main results of the international discussion “The Work of Michel Tournier: Semiotics and Mythology”, which took place as part of the annual Festival “Days of Francophonie” at the Russian State Library for Foreign Literature named after M.I. Rudomino on March 18, 2024 and was dedicated to the centenary of the writer’s birth. The event, which was organized as part of the cooperation of the Cultural Center “Frankoteka” of …
Circulating Emotions
We propose to analyze how emotions and stereotypes circulate, using the example of recent UNESCO publications in artificial intelligence (AI). Yuri Lotman outlined two types of restrictions imposed by culture on human behavior, regulated by shame or fear, respectively. This distinction coincides with the division of the collective into ‘we’ and ‘they’ groups. The circulation of emotions is a semiotic process, and in the discourse on AI, the prima…
Looking at the stars in the twenty-first century
In the article, we consider special cases of technological progress and social dystopia studied by Yuri Lotman from the point of view of the inhabitants of the first quarter of the twenty-first century. The analysis is illustrated by works of literary fiction: Kazuo Ishiguro's dystopian novels Never Let Me Go (2005) and Klara and the Sun (2021)
Semiotics, History, Health Crisis 2020—2021
In the article, semiotics as a science is presented in its connection with history: we consider the concept of Commemorations observed by UNESCO, the moment of unpredictability and the phenomenon that Yuri Lotman called “the retrospective view of the historian”. The twenties of the 21st century have become an era of unpredictable health crisis that semioticians continue to analyze. For example, at recent major international online conferences and…
The article will focus on our personal experience in Russian translation of the reference book by French semioticians Algirdas Julien Greimas and Jacques Fontanille on the semiotics of passions. In particular, possible translative variations of terms relating to passions such as ‘umbrage’ with no exact analogue in Russian have been discussed with one of the authors, Jacques Fontanille. According to Umberto Eco, for a theory of translation, not on…
