  • Punitiveness and Perceptions of Criminality

Open Access•Michael Costelloe, Madeline Stenger et al.•ARTICLE•Race and Justice•2021

This study examines the effect of the residency status (undocumented immigrant, refugee, or U.S. citizen) and the country of origin-ethnicity of an offender on perceptions of criminality and on the level of punitiveness expressed by a random sample of college seniors attending a southwestern university. A factorial survey design was administered asking respondents to apply a punishment (incarceration or no incarceration) and to rate the level of …

  • The Effect of Marijuana Legalization on Anticipated Use

Open Access•Christine Arazan, Michael Costelloe et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015•Referências: 1

Marijuana is the most frequently used illicit drug in the world (Erickson, Van Der Maas, and Hathaway, 2013:428). Open Access•Michael Costelloe, Michael T Costelloe et al.•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Theoretical…•2014

Many of the early criminological theories were founded on the unquestioned belief that people in the lower classes were more prone to criminal behavior than are those who are economically better off. While today this assumption is not as universally accepted, it still has many proponents. This entry examines the link between social class and…

  • Punitive attitudes toward criminals

    Open Access•Michael Costelloe, Michael T Costelloe et al.•ARTICLE•Punishment & Society•2009•Citada por: 43•Referências: 12

This article examines whether and in what ways punitive attitudes toward criminals can be understood as having roots in two hypothesized sources of anxiety in western society. The first is the danger of crime and its salience and the second is economic insecurity. Both have been seen as sources of growing perceptions that the State is failing in its responsibility to provide for citizen's physical safety and economic security. Punitiveness toward…

  • Immigration as Threat

    Open Access•Michael Costelloe•ARTICLE•The Journal of Public and…•2008•Citada por: 2•Referências: 6

Public discourse concerning immigration and immigration policy often relies on the characterization and universalization of the threats that are posed by increasing immigration. It is the specification and reference to these threats that allows one to consider immigration as "moral panic." It is through this lens, that I undertake a content analysis of letters to the editor that appeared in a large southwestern city newspaper from January 1st 200…
