  • Prevalence of malnutrition among Samoan children aged 5 to 11 years in 2019–2020

Open Access•Courtney C Choy, Vaimoana Filipo Lupematasila et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2023

Moderate-to-high levels of overweight/obesity and anaemia call for comprehensive intervention strategies

  • C‐reactive protein in adult Samoans

Open Access•Anna C Rivara, Margaret Corley et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2021

These data are among the first to demonstrate CRP correlates in a sample of adult Samoans. CRP differed by sex and was associated with BMI, adiposity, and some cardiometabolic risk markers. These data align with findings in other populations

  • Comparability of The Netherlands Physical Activity Questionnaire with Accelerometer-Measured Physical Activity in Samoan Children

    Open Access•Clara R Warmath, Courtney C Choy et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Accurate measurement of physical activity is critical to understand its role in cardiometabolic health and obesity development in children and to monitor trends in behavior and evaluate interventions. An ongoing mixed-longitudinal study of child growth and development in Samoa is collecting physical activity data with both accelerometers and the Netherlands Physical Activity Questionnaire (NPAQ). The aims of our analyses were to (1) describe the …

  • Persistence of anaemia among Samoan preschool age children

Open Access•Bohao Wu, Courtney C Choy et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2021

Objective: To characterise the prevalence and persistence of anaemia among Samoan children over a 2–3-year period. Design: Data were from two consecutive waves (2015 and 2017–2018) of the Ola Tuputupua’e ‘Growing up’ study. Anaemia (Hb Setting: Eleven Samoan villages. Participants: Mother–child pairs ( n 257) recruited in 2015 and reassessed in 2017–2018. Results: Anaemia prevalence was 33·9 % in 2015 and 28·0 % in 2017–2018; 35·6 % of cases iden…

  • Associations between socioeconomic resources and adiposity traits in adults

    Open Access•Courtney C Choy, Nicola L Hawley et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2020

In low- and middle-income countries, earlier in economic development, obesity tends to be more prevalent in high socioeconomic resource groups compared to low. Later in development, the distribution of obesity tends to show the opposite pattern, becoming more prevalent in those with low socioeconomic resources. This shift in obesity prevalence tends to occur between a gross national income per capita (GNI) of US$1,000 to $4,000 dollars. Whether a…

  • Piloting a food photo sorting activity in Samoa to assess maternal beliefs and their role in child diet

    Open Access•Veeraya K Tanawattanacharoen, Courtney C Choy et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2020

Eating habits begin forming early in life when parental beliefs and behaviours often play a major role in shaping dietary intake. We aimed to assess maternal beliefs about the cost, social status, and nutritional value of foods in Samoa-a setting with an alarming burden of childhood obesity-and to determine how those beliefs may be related to child dietary intake. Samoan mothers (n = 44) sorted photographs of 26 foods commonly consumed in childre…

  • Effect of maternal nutrient intake during 31–37 weeks gestation on offspring body composition in Samoa

Open Access•Kendall Arslanian, Kendall J Arslanian et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2020

While maternal dietary intake was not associated with infant adiposity or lean mass, we observed an effect on bone mass whose role in regulating metabolic health is overlooked

  • Assessing the impact of high blood pressure referrals on hypertension awareness and management, BMI, and blood pressure values in adult Samoans 2010–2019

Open Access•Anna C Rivara, Alysa Pomer et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2020

The Samoan population has experienced rapid increases in the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and NCD risk factors over the last 30 years. However, understanding how increased awareness and treatment of these conditions in reducing disease burden remains understudied. Using data from a longitudinal study (2010-2019) of cardiometabolic health among Samoan adults, we assess the impact of a referral for elevated blood pressure (BP) on …

  • Dietary patterns are associated with child, maternal and household-level characteristics and overweight/obesity among young Samoan children

Open Access•Courtney C Choy, Dongqing Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2018

Objective Among young Samoan children, diet may not be optimal: in 2015, 16·1 % of 24–59-month-olds were overweight/obese, 20·3 % stunted and 34·1 % anaemic. The present study aimed to identify dietary patterns among 24–59-month-old Samoan children and evaluate their association with: (i) child, maternal and household characteristics; and (ii) nutritional status indicators (stunting, overweight/obesity, anaemia). Design A community-based, cross-s…

  • Nutrient intake among Samoan children aged 2–4 years in 2015

    Open Access•Courtney C Choy, Avery A Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2018

Since inadequate dietary micronutrient intake was more common among older children (4-4.99 years) and those in the rural region, intervention should be targeted at those groups

  • Child, maternal and household-level correlates of nutritional status

    Open Access•Courtney C Choy, Mahesh M Desai et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2017

Objective Young children are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition as nutrition transition progresses. The present study aimed to document the prevalence, coexistence and correlates of nutritional status (stunting, overweight/obesity and anaemia) in Samoan children aged 24–59 months. Design A cross-sectional community-based survey. Height and weight were used to determine prevalence of stunting (height-for-age Z -score Z -score >+2) based on WH…
