  • Exploring Different Sampling Strategies

Open Access•Nora Hamdiui, Maartje Boer et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2024

INTRODUCTION: In the Netherlands, since 1996, there is a national cervical cancer (CC) screening programme in place for women aged 30-60 years. The participation of Turkish- and Moroccan-Dutch women is very low. To facilitate their informed decision-making, we developed a culturally sensitive educational video, and evaluated it through a questionnaire study. Since we used multiple strategies for the recruitment of respondents, we aimed (1) to exp…

  • The development of a culturally sensitive educational video

Open Access•Nora Hamdiui, Martine Bouman et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2022

BACKGROUND: In the Netherlands, all women aged 30-60 years are invited to participate in the national cervical cancer screening programme, which is aimed at early detection and treatment of precancerous lesions. One fourth of the Dutch population has a migration background, with Turkish and Moroccan immigrants being the largest immigrant populations. Turkish- and Moroccan-Dutch women show lower screening participation rates and a higher incidence…

  • Decision-making, barriers, and facilitators regarding cervical cancer screening participation among Turkish and Moroccan women in the Netherlands

    Open Access•Nora Hamdiui, Eline Marchena et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2021•Citada por: 3•Referências: 5

OBJECTIVES: Whether the lower Dutch cervical cancer (CC) screening participation of Turkish- and Moroccan-Dutch women is based on informed decision-making is unknown. Our aim was to explore how and why Turkish- and Moroccan-Dutch women decide to participate or not in the current Dutch CC screening programme as well as to learn their perceptions on self-sampling. DESIGN: Six focus group discussions were conducted between March and April 2019 with …

  • Clustering of chronic hepatitis B screening intentions in social networks of Moroccan immigrants in the Netherlands

Open Access•Nora Hamdiui, Vincent Busken et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

The findings of our pilot study show clustering of screening intention among individuals in the same network. This provides opportunities for social network interventions to encourage participation in hepatitis B screening initiatives

  • Education on tick bite and Lyme borreliosis prevention, aimed at schoolchildren in the Netherlands

    Open Access•D Beaujean, D J M A Beaujean et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

The positive knowledge effects observed in the control group suggests the presence of a mere measurement effect related to completion of the questionnaire. The game did not outperform the leaflet or control group on all outcome measures. Therefore, the game may be of value as a complementary role, in addition to other media, in child-specific public health education programs on ticks and LB. This trial was retrospectively registered on October 21…

  • Enhancing Syndromic Surveillance With Online Respondent-Driven Detection

Mart L Stein, Jim E van Steenbergen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2015•Referências: 16

Objectives. We investigated the feasibility of combining an online chain recruitment method (respondent-driven detection) and participatory surveillance panels to collect previously undetected information on infectious diseases via social networks of participants. Methods. In 2014, volunteers from 2 large panels in the Netherlands were invited to complete a survey focusing on symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections and to invite 4 individu…

  • Public knowledge and preventive behavior during a large-scale Salmonella outbreak

Open Access•Lex Van Velsen, D Beaujean et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

To persuade the public to take preventive actions, public health organizations should deliver their message primarily through mass media. Wikipedia seems a promising instrument for educating the public about food-borne Salmonella

  • Determinants of HPV vaccination intentions among Dutch girls and their mothers

Open Access•Hilde van Keulen, Hilde M van Keulen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Because of the large contribution of social-psychological variables to the explained variance of HPV vaccination intentions among the mothers and daughters, future communication strategies targeting HPV vaccination uptake should address attitudes, beliefs, subjective norms and habit strength. There is a need for longitudinal research to confirm the causality of the association between these determinants and HPV vaccination behavior indicated by t…

  • An exploratory qualitative assessment of factors influencing childhood vaccine providers' intention to recommend immunization in the Netherlands

Open Access•Liesbeth Mollema, Jojet M Staal et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Our qualitative assessment provides an overview of beliefs associated with providers' intention to recommend vaccinations. They were motivated to support the NIP, but their intentions to recommend vaccinations were affected by the perceived relevance of the vaccines, practical issues like limited time and by certain types of resistant parents. These results will inform future studies to test the magnitude and relative impact of these factors

  • Perceived risk, anxiety, and behavioural responses of the general public during the early phase of the Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic in the Netherlands

    Open Access•Marloes Bults, D Beaujean et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

Decreasing trends over time in perceived severity and anxiety are consistent with the reality: the clinical picture of influenza turned out to be mild in course of time. Although (inter)national health authorities initially overestimated the case fatality rate, the public stayed calm and remained to have a relatively high intention to comply with preventive measures

  • Analysis of timeliness of infectious disease reporting in the Netherlands

Open Access•Elisabeth Reijn, Corien Swaan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

Over the study period, many cases of the six notifiable diseases were not reported within two incubation periods, and many were reported more than three days after laboratory diagnosis. An increase in direct laboratory reporting of diagnoses to MHS would improve timeliness, as would the use of fax rather than post or e-mail. Automated reporting systems have to be explored in the Netherlands. Development of standardised and improved measures for t…

  • Monitoring the level of government trust, risk perception and intention of the general public to adopt protective measures during the influenza A (H1N1) pandemic in the Netherlands

Open Access•Willemien van der Weerd, Danielle R M Timmermans et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

The Dutch response to the H1N1 virus was relatively muted. Higher levels of trust in the government, fear/worry, and perceived vulnerability were all positively related to an intention to accept vaccination. Only fear/worry was positively linked to an intention to adopt protective measures during the entire pandemic. Risk and crisis communication by the government should focus on building and maintaining trust by providing information about preve…

  • Hepatitis A Virus Immunity and Seroconversion Among Contacts of Acute Hepatitis A Patients in Amsterdam, 1996–2000

Gerard J B Sonder, Jim E van Steenbergen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2004•Referências: 11

Objectives. We evaluated the hepatitis A virus (HAV) control policy (hygienic precautions and passive immunization with immune globulin) for “household contacts” (defined as all people who lived in the same house and who shared the same toilet with the patient, people who took care of an HAV-infected child, and sexual partners of the patient) of acute hepatitis A patients between 1996 and 2000. Methods. We examined the characteristics and the ser…
