Indications for tooth extraction in periodontal treatment with particular emphasis on the role of patient’s oral hygiene
Research objective: To present current indications for the extraction of teeth affected by periodontal disease, highlighting the significance of the patient’s oral hygiene as a key prognostic factor in treatment outcomes. Methodology: A narrative review of recent literature and clinical guidelines focusing on indications for tooth extraction in periodontal therapy, considering both local and systemic factors, as well as patient behavior related t…
Treatment of mucocele - surgical excision or laser therapy
Research objective: To compare the effectiveness, benefits, and limitations of surgical versus laser treatment methods in the management of oral mucoceles. Methodology: A literature review was conducted, analyzing available clinical data on recurrence rates, healing duration, patient comfort, and postoperative complications associated with both treatment modalities. Main conclusions: Laser treatment of mucoceles tends to offer shorter healing tim…
Suturing of oral mucosal wounds post-surgery
Research objective: To evaluate the necessity and effectiveness of suturing in oral surgery procedures, particularly tooth extractions, by analyzing when sutures support healing and when a sutureless approach may be preferable. Methodology: A literature-based analysis of clinical outcomes associated with both sutured and sutureless wound closure methods in oral surgery, with consideration of procedural complexity, anatomical location, and patient…
Stopping Killer Robot Proliferation to Tyrants and Terrorists
Autonomous weapon systems (AWS) – military robots able to select and engage targets with lethal force on their own – are a subject of voluminous ethical debates, with many calling for a universal ban on AWS. One of the most prominent arguments for such a ban is based on the threat of anti-personnel AWS – killer robots – to terrorist groups and totalitarian regimes. As these weapons would be ideal for terrorist or oppressive ends, and as having su…
Autonomous weapon systems impact on incidence of armed conflict
Some proponents of a ban on Autonomous Weapon Systems (AWS) believe adopting these would lower the threshold for war, and is thus morally undesirable. This paper argues against that thesis. First, removing a single constraint on warmaking does not automatically make war more likely. Analysis of the causal input of other more potent restraints shows this holds true for just a fraction of potential conflicts. Secondly, AWS adoption would also impac…
AWS compliance with the ethical principle of proportionality
The ethical Principle of Proportionality requires combatants not to cause collateral harm excessive in comparison to the anticipated military advantage of an attack. This principle is considered a major (and perhaps insurmountable) obstacle to ethical use of autonomous weapon systems (AWS). This article reviews three possible solutions to the problem of achieving Proportionality compliance in AWS. In doing so, I describe and discuss the three com…
