Reactive Nationalism? Governance Through Identities in an Eastern Ukrainian City
The widespread resistance to the Russian invasion in 2022 seems to support the idea that the Ukrainian nationalist project became convincing to former ‘pro-Russian’ voters. This essay takes an ethnographically informed look at the way the identitarian cleavage works in an industrial city in eastern Ukraine. I argue that, prior to the invasion, it helped consolidate the power of the local elite but was of no great importance to the working class. …

The ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war seems to have prompted a return to anthropology's origins: the armchair. Claiming authority based on status and knowledge accumulated elsewhere and extrapolated to Ukraine, public scholars have proffered takes, op-eds, and geopolitical phantasies. What happens when the state removes the usual obstacles preventing refugees to 'integrate'? Our article analyses the case of Ukrainians who fled the war to settle in France. Their legal status is different from that of 'classic' refugees: the EU directive on temporary protection gives them the freedom to move and the right to work.
