  • Associations in Cigarette Smoking and Health Conditions by Race/Ethnicity Among a Diverse Sample of Patients Receiving Treatment in a Federally Qualified Health Care Setting in Chicago

Open Access•Larisa Burke, Alana Steffen et al.•ARTICLE•Health Equity•2023

Purpose: To examine the association of cigarette use and smoking-related health conditions by race/ethnicity among diverse and low-income patients at a federally qualified health center (FQHC). Methods: =51,670). Smoking categories included everyday/heavy smoker, someday/light smoker, former smoker, or never smoker. Results: Current and former smoking rates were 20.1% and 15.2%, respectively. Males, Black, White, non-partnered, older, and Medicai…

  • Mi-Care

    Open Access•Karriem S Watson, Katherine Y Tossas et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Multiple evidence-based interventions (EBIs) have been developed to improve the completion of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening within Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and other safety net settings in marginalized communities. Little effort has been made, however, to evaluate their relative effectiveness across different clinical contexts and populations. To this end, we tested the relative effectiveness of three EBIs (mailed birthday c…

  • Project Coalesce—An Example of Academic Institutions as Conveners of Community-Clinic Partnerships to Improve Cancer Screening Access

Open Access•Katherine Y Tossas, Savannah Reitzel et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

In Virginia, 56% of colorectal cancers (CRC) are diagnosed late, making it one of three enduring CRC mortality hotspots in the US. Cervical cancer (CCa) exhibits a similar pattern, with 48% late-stage diagnosis. Mortality for these cancers is worse for non-Latinx/e(nL)-Black people relative to nL-White people in Virginia, but preventable with equitable screening access and timely diagnostic follow-up. However, structural barriers, such as fractur…

  • Advancing Inclusive Research

    Owen Garrick, Ruben A Mesa et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2022

Well-characterized disparities in clinical research have disproportionately affected patients of color, particularly in underserved communities. To tackle these barriers, Genentech formed the External Council for Advancing Inclusive Research, a 14-person committee dedicated to developing strategies to increase clinical research participation. To help improve the recruitment and retention of patients of color, this article chronicles our efforts t…

  • A Study Protocol for Increasing Access to Smoking Cessation Treatments for Low-Income Minority Smokers

    Open Access•Alicia K Matthews, Karriem S Watson et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Background: Smoking rates among low-income patients are double those of the general population. Access to health care is an essential social determinant of health. Federally qualified health care centers (FQHC) are government-supported and community-based centers to increase access to health care for non-insured and underinsured patients. However, barriers to implementation impact adherence and sustainability of evidence-based smoking cessation w…

  • Ethnic Prevalence of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Deletion (D) Polymorphism and Covid-19 Risk

Open Access•Rangaprasad Sarangarajan, Robert Winn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Racial and Ethnic…•2021

  • Participatory Genomic Testing Can Effectively Disseminate Cardiovascular Pharmacogenomics Concepts within Federally Qualified Health Centers

    Amber E Johnson, Stephen Broughton et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2020

We have determined that a pharmacogenomics educational program tailored for an underrepresented community is feasible and acceptable. Outcomes will advise methodology for larger implementation studies

  • Building Cross-Institutional Collaborative Infrastructure and Processes

Michael A Simon, Marian Fitzgibbon et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in community health…•2019•Citada por: 1•Referências: 3

Large-scale collaborative research and education projects across institutions can be challenging, particularly when establishing a working infrastructure and aligning priorities. However, the benefit of establishing key processes in the early years of the collaborative process can lead to high-quality research output, impact, and a sustainable partnership

  • Engaging African American Men as Citizen Scientists to Validate a Prostate Cancer Biomarker

Karriem S Watson, Vida Henderson et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in community health…•2019•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

We highlight social networks/assets of stakeholders, CSs curriculum development/implementation, and recruitment of healthy controls for PHI validation
