Porous skeletal lesions in perspective
OBJECTIVE: Porous skeletal lesion (PSL) is a descriptive term for bone altered by macroscopic perforations or pits. This paper seeks to assist researchers in meaningfully interpreting PSLs by offering perspectives on the currently available imaging modalities and approaches to better evaluate these important lesions. As a macro-morphological category, PSL is diagnostically non-specific; such lesions can result from formative defects, resorptive a…

Kinship practices in Early Iron Age South-east Europe
The burial of multiple individuals within a single funerary monument invites speculation about the relationships between the deceased: were they chosen on the basis of status, gender or relatedness, for example? Here, the authors present the results of aDNA and isotope analyses conducted on seven individuals from an Early Iron Age barrow at Dolge njive, south-eastern Slovenia. All seven individuals are close biological relatives. While the group …
št.) z območij Slovenije in Hrvaške. Osteološka raziskava šestih oseb je pokazala, da gre za ostanke enega mlajšega odraslega mošk…

Age estimation
The (mis)use of adult age estimates in osteology
CONTEXT: Adult age-at-death is presented in a number of different ways by anthropologists. Ordinal categories predominate in osteoarchaeology, but do not reflect individual variation in ageing, with too many adults being classified as "middle adults". In addition, mean ages (derived from reference samples) are overly-relied upon when developing and testing methods. In both cases, "age mimicry" is not adequately accounted for. OBJECTIVES: To highl…

Finding Vikings in the Danelaw
Historical, artefactual and place‐name evidence indicates that S candinavian migrants moved to eastern E ngland in the ninth century AD , settling in the D anelaw. However, only a handful of characteristically S candinavian burials have been found in the region. One, widely held, explanation is that most of these S candinavian settlers quickly adopted local C hristian burial customs, thus leaving S candinavians indistinguishable from the A nglo‐ …
Multicentric osteosarcoma associated with Dish, in a 19th century burial from England
Osteosarcoma is a rare type of malignant neoplasm that is most frequent in adolescents and young adults although it can develop at any age. It can metastasize from a primary site in bone to other bones and soft tissues. Usually the disorder causes a single bone-forming lesion (unicentric) but some cases have multicentric, bone-forming lesions. Some of these lesions develop at different sites at different times. In a second variant of multicentric…

High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in the investigation of gout in palaeopathology
Gout is a disease caused by the abnormal accumulation of uric acid in the body, which can result in sodium urate crystals forming tophi at joints, with associated erosion of bone and cartilage. Only two examples of tophi have been reported from archaeological individuals, and the diagnosis of gout based on dry bone manifestations can be difficult. This paper presents preliminary results of a new technique to aid the diagnosis of gout in palaeopat…
