Reading Guillory's Cultural Capital in South Africa
This article opens with the 2015 Rhodes Must Fall protests at the University of Cape Town, when a student poured feces on a statue of Cecil Rhodes. This moment exemplifies the ambivalent relationship between symbolic politics and demands for institutional transformation in postapartheid South Africa. The Little and the Large
This chapter explores how a little prayer book with origins in the southern Arabian Peninsula circulated on the southern tip of the African continent. The prayer was the Rātib al-Haddād, and it was arranged by a Sufi luminary in Yemen sometime in the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. It probably circulated orally at first, but its transformation into manuscript and then printed book form is what animates this chapter. Through it we tr…
Elements of a ‘Timbuktu Manual of Style’
This is a translation of a short text that clarifies the role of additional markings in manuscripts from Timbuktu. It is the work of an experienced reader and author of manuscripts in Timbuktu, Mahmoud Mohamed Dedéou, known as Cheikh Hamou. It is therefore a very useful introduction to an often overlooked practice in the art of scholarship in that part of the world

This essay focuses on the role of Ahmad Bul'araf in the circulation of books – in their manuscript and their printed forms – from his place of residence in Timbuktu for about 50 years, in the first part of the twentieth century. Aḥmad Bul‘arāf died in September 1955 and was buried in his adopted Timbuktu. He was laid to rest in the town's Sīdi al-Wāfi al-Amīr al-Arawāni cemetery but it would be hard to identify his grave. Gravestones soon disappear into their natural sandy settings. At the time he was widely eulogized for his life's work as a man of religion, culture, and knowledge. This paper focuses on the Arabic Study Circle and the role of its most influential member Joseph Perdu. It shows how the public life of the organization could not continue to bear the ambiguity of the identity of Perdu.
