The New Deal Party System: A Reappraisal Since the publication in 1955 of Key's seminal article on elections, much of the literature on the New Deal party system has focused on whether the election of 1928, 1932, or 1936 was the critical one-the contest in which normal majority status passed from the Republican to the Democratic party.
