  • Roger Williams Not a Seeker but a “Witness in Sackcloth”

    J Stanley Lemons•ARTICLE•The New England Quarterly•2015

For more than 370 years Roger Williams has been called a “Seeker,” a label pinned on him by his enemies in the 1640s. But, it is time to discard this erroneous term and accept him as he saw himself as a one of God’s “Witnesses in Sack-cloth.”

  • John Carter Minkins

J Stanley Lemons, Diane Lambert•ARTICLE•The New England Quarterly•2003

Southern segregationists enacted Jim Crow laws, while national attention to racial issues plummeted after Reconstruction. Thousands of workplaces, even whole professions, were off-limits to African Americans, North and South, and those blacks who did succeed knew that they might be attacked for that very rea…

THE MINSTREL SHOW WAS AMERICA'S FIRST NATIONAL, POPULAR ENTERtainment form, and from it came two of the classic stereotyped characters of blacks.' One was Zip Coon and the other was Jim Crow. Zip Coon was a preposterous, citified dandy. In the minstrel shows he was easily recognized in his bright, loud, exaggerated clothes: swallow-tail coat with wide lapels, gaudy shirts, striped pants, spats, and top hat. He was a highstepping strutter with a m…
