Sea spray effects on typhoon prediction in the Yellow and East China Seas
This study investigates the impact of sea spray parameterization on typhoon prediction in the Yellow and East China Seas (YECS) region. Using an air-sea-wave coupled model, we evaluate changes due to sea spray effects in the simulated intensity and structure of Typhoons Lingling (2019) and Maysak (2020). Enabling sea spray effect enhances surface turbulent heat fluxes considerably around the typhoon centers (74% increase for Lingling, 92% for May…
Characterizing blocking mobility and its role in Northern Hemisphere cold extremes
Atmospheric blocking events, commonly studied as quasi-stationary regional phenomena, are often observed with zonal movement influenced by the background flow, retrograding Rossby waves, and sea ice cover. However, the effects of these movements on cold extremes remain understudied. This study classifies the movements of atmospheric blocking into westward-moving, eastward-moving, and quasi-stationary across different regions during winters from 1…
Statistical seasonal prediction of Arctic sea ice concentration based on spatiotemporal anomaly persistent method
Accurate prediction of Arctic sea ice is crucial for high-latitude and even mid-latitude climate prediction. It significantly affects atmospheric circulation, the environment, ecology, and maritime transport. This study developed a statistical prediction model to predict monthly Arctic sea ice concentration for up to one year based on the season-reliant empirical orthogonal functions (SEOFs) technique. Its prediction skill was compared with that …
Interdecadal changes and the role of Philippine Sea convection in the intensification of Indian spring heatwaves
Severe heatwaves have become increasingly frequent over the Indian subcontinent in recent decades. This study found that the increase in extreme heatwaves is related to a significant decadal change in surface temperatures over the Indian subcontinent, and revealed that the increase in convective activity in the Philippine Sea plays a crucial role in this decadal change in surface temperature. Specifically, the surface temperature over the Indian …
Improving the seasonal forecast by utilizing the observed relationship between the Arctic Oscillation and Northern Hemisphere surface air temperature
Although the seasonal prediction skill of climate models has improved significantly in recent decades, the prediction skill of the Arctic Oscillation (AO), the dominant climate mode over the Northern Hemisphere, remains poor. Additionally, the local representation of AO impacts has diverged from observations, which limits seasonal prediction skill of climate models. In this study, we attempted to improve prediction skill of surface air temperatur…
Precipitation-induced abrupt decrease of Siberian wildfire in summer 2022 under continued warming
Wildfires in Northeast (NE) Siberia have become more frequent owing to the warming climate, exerting a profound impact on the global carbon cycle. While an increase in global temperature is recognized as a primary driver of unprecedented wildfires, the role of precipitation during wildfire season is relatively unexplored. Here, we present evidence that an increase in summer precipitation led to a sudden decrease in NE Siberian wildfires, especial…
Unveiling the pivotal influence of sea spray heat fluxes on hurricane rapid intensification
Predicting rapid hurricane intensification remains a challenge, partially due to neglected factors like sea spray-mediated heat flux. To shed light on the specific roles of spray-mediated sensible and latent heat fluxes, we conducted sensitivity experiments with heat flux parameterizations. Our results demonstrate that the inclusion and variation of the spray-mediated sensible heat significantly reduce model errors when compared against dropsonde…
Phytoplankton responses to increasing Arctic river discharge under the present and future climate simulations
In recent decades, the unprecedented rate of Arctic warming has accelerated the high-latitude landmass hydrological cycle, leading to increased river discharge into the Arctic Ocean. This study elucidates the role of Arctic river discharge, which was the large model uncertainty in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6, for the phytoplankton responses in present-day and future climate simulations by adding fresh water into the model. In the …
Difference in boreal winter predictability between two dynamical cores of Community Atmosphere Model 5
This study investigates the sensitivity of the boreal winter prediction skill of Community Atmosphere Model 5 to the choice of the dynamical core. Both finite volume (FV) and spectral element (SE) dynamical cores are tested. An additional FV with the SE topography (FV SE ) is also conducted to isolate the possible influence of the topography. The three dynamical core experiments, which ran from 2001/2002–2017/2018, are validated using Japanese 55…
Communicating Arctic-midlatitude weather and ecosystem connections
There is controversy over the extent that Arctic change can influence midlatitude extreme weather and vis-versa. Part of the uncertainty is due to the intermittency of the connection through the jet stream and polar vortex that leads to different emphases when communicating research. Although statistical studies and model results often show weak or non-existent connections, we can provide two observational examples. Three interactive physical pro…
How do intermittency and simultaneous processes obfuscate the Arctic influence on midlatitude winter extreme weather events
Pronounced changes in the Arctic environment add a new potential driver of anomalous weather patterns in midlatitudes that affect billions of people. Recent studies of these Arctic/midlatitude weather linkages, however, state inconsistent conclusions. A source of uncertainty arises from the chaotic nature of the atmosphere. Thermodynamic forcing by a rapidly warming Arctic contributes to weather events through changing surface heat fluxes and lar…
Impacts of the Arctic-midlatitude teleconnection on wintertime seasonal climate forecasts
The impact of the Arctic on midlatitude weather and climate is still in scientific debate. The observation-based analysis, however, shows frequent concurrences of Arctic warming with extreme cold in the midlatitudes, and vice versa. This teleconnection could aid in seasonal climate forecasts for the midlatitudes. This study assessed the forecast skill of Arctic temperature and the Arctic-midlatitude teleconnection patterns in operational seasonal…
Recent weakening of the southern stratospheric polar vortex and its impact on the surface climate over Antarctica
The variability in the southern stratospheric polar vortex (SSPV) and its downward coupling with the troposphere are known to play a crucial role in driving climate variability over Antarctica. In this study, SSPV weakening events and their impacts on the surface climate of Antarctica are examined using in-situ observation and reanalysis data.Combining criteria from several previous studies, we introduce a new detection method for SSPV weakening e…
A missing component of Arctic warming
Gas flaring during oil extraction over the Arctic region is the primary source of warming-inducing aerosols (e.g. black carbon (BC)) with a strong potential to affect regional climate change. Despite continual BC emissions near the Arctic Ocean via gas flaring, the climatic impact of BC related to gas flaring remains uncertain. Here, we present simulations of potential gas flaring using an earth system model with comprehensive aerosol physics to …
How does the SST variability over the western North Atlantic Ocean control Arctic warming over the Barents–Kara Seas
Arctic warming over the BarentsKara Seas and its impacts on the mid-latitude circulations have been widely discussed. However, the specific mechanism that brings the warming still remains unclear. In this study, a possible cause of the regional Arctic warming over the BarentsKara Seas during early winter (OctoberDecember) is suggested. We found that warmer sea surface temperature anomalies over the western North Atlantic Ocean (WNAO) modulate the…
Arctic-North Pacific coupled impacts on the late autumn cold in North America
The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is known to bring an anomalously cold (warm) period to southeastern (northwestern) North America during the cold season of its positive phase through a Rossby wave linkage. This study provides evidence that the remote connection between the North Pacific and the downstream temperature over central North America is strengthened by the warm arctic conditions over the Chukchi and East Siberian Sea, especially in…
Intensified Arctic warming under greenhouse warming by vegetation–atmosphere–sea ice interaction
Observations and modeling studies indicate that enhanced vegetation activities over highlatitudes under an elevated CO2 concentration accelerate surface warming by reducing thesurface albedo. In this study, we suggest that vegetation-atmosphere-sea ice interactions overhigh latitudes can induce an additional amplification of Arctic warming. Our hypothesis is testedby a series of coupled vegetation-climate model simulations under 2xCO2 environment…
