  • Aesthetics and Agency in Experiments

Open Access•A Murphy, Adrian Currie et al.•ARTICLE•Australasian Journal of Philosophy•2026

We place agency front-and-centre in the aesthetics of science via an analysis of experimental design and performance. This first involves developing an account of scientific agency relevant to experiment. We do this via an analogy between experiments and games (as understood by Suits and Nguyen): both involve artificial practical environments designed to enable participants to exercise particular forms of agency. Second, we consider how this acco…

  • Form and Content

    Open Access•A Murphy•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 44

Those who wish to defend the role of aesthetic values in science face a dilemma: aesthetic language is either used metaphorically for what are ultimately epistemic features, or it is used literally, but the importance of such values for science is unclear. This article introduces a new account that gets around this problem by considering an overlooked source of aesthetic value in science: the relation between form and content. A fit between the c…

  • Imagination in science

    Open Access•A Murphy•ARTICLE•Philosophy Compass•2022•Citada por: 6•Referências: 77

While discussions of the imagination have been limited in philosophy of science, this is beginning to change. In recent years, a vast literature on imagination in science has emerged. This paper surveys the current field, including the changing attitudes towards the scientific imagination, the fiction view of models, how the imagination can lead to knowledge and understanding, and the value of different types of imagination. It ends with a discus…

  • The Value of Surprise in Science

    Open Access•Steven French, A Murphy•ARTICLE•Erkenntnis•2021•Citada por: 4

Scientific results are often presented as 'surprising' as if that is a good thing. Is it? And if so, why? What is the value of surprise in science? Discussions of surprise in science have been limited, but surprise has been used as a way of defending the epistemic privilege of experiments over simulations. The argument is that while experiments can 'confound', simulations can merely surprise (Morgan, 2005). Our aim in this paper is to show that t…

  • Toward a Pluralist Account of the Imagination in Science

    Open Access•A Murphy•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•2020•Citada por: 5•Referências: 15

Typically, the imagination in thought experiments has been taken to consist in mental images; we visualize the state of affairs described. A recent alternative from Fiora Salis and Roman Frigg maintains that it is only the propositional imagination that is necessary for the conduct of a thought experiment. I set out problems with these monistic accounts and develop a pluralist stance. Thought experiments appeal to a variety of our imaginative cap…

  • Penetrating spaces

    Robert J McMurtrie, A Murphy•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•2016•Referências: 6

Penetrating spaces examines how movement is used as a semiotic resource to transform the meaning potential of the installation space Spreading the Love. This transformation underscores the rewriting of the script of rape, a scripted interaction that draws upon, yet also creates, social configurations of sexuality and gender. Being a “script”, it can be rewritten, or transformed, by playing socially constructed roles differently. Drawing on perfor…

  • Socio-demographic predictors of uptake of MMR immunisation in the lifeways cohort study

Lucy Jessop, C C Kelleher et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2009

examined and compared treatment of Ma ori (Indigenous) and non-Ma ori New Zealanders with colon cancer. Methods: From the New Zealand Cancer Registry we identified a population-based cohort of 629 patients diagnosed with colon cancer between 1996 and 2003. We reviewed medical notes and compared surgical and oncology treatment in Ma ori and non-Ma ori patients. We adjusted treatment differences for tumour characteristics, patient comorbidity and t…

  • National Claims to Territory in the Modern State System

    A Murphy, Ann B Murphy•ARTICLE•Geopolitics•2002•Citada por: 18

Recent research has focused on the efforts of national leaders to legitimize and strengthen national identity through the construction of uncomplicated, linear national histories. Paralleling, and in some respects advancing, these efforts are initiatives aimed at staking national claims to particular territories. These claims are the product of 'regimes of territorial legitimation' that reflect the norms of the modern state system. They are funda…
