In 2008–09, over 1400 students and 50 staff from 12 universities around Australia completed interviews and questionnaires. Professor Mansfield has been an outstanding teacher and scholar of history in Australia for over 50 years. He pioneered the teaching of early modern European history at the University of Sydney in the 1950s and subsequently at Macquarie University. His abiding research interest has been the humanist scholar Erasmus of Rotterdam (c.1469–1536).
