Understanding Mexico’s Drug Violence
A dramatic increase in criminal violence in Mexico since 2007 has resulted in an estimated 60,000–70,000 “additional” homicides, often of an especially brutal form, related to drug trafficking and other organized-crime activities. This violence has been accompanied by a steep increase in rates of kidnapping and extortion and has targeted participants in the narcotics trade as well as government officials, journalists, and civil society activists.…
The Way of the Gun
The volume of firearms sold in USA and trafficked across the US–Mexico border is notoriously difficult to estimate. We consider a unique approach using GIS-generated county-level panel data (1993–1999 and 2010–2012) of Federal Firearms Licenses to sell small arms (FFLs) to estimate the realized demand for firearms based on the distance by road from the nearest point on the US–Mexico border. This paper examines the tale of the two cities, Ciudad Juárez and Tijuana. These two municipalities are the largest of Mexico's metropolises along the country's roughly 2,000-mile frontier with the United States, the longest land border between the “global north” and the “global south.” This narrative builds on several years of research regarding Mexico's rule of law challenges, during which the author conducted multiple field research trips to b…

Law enforcement and security challenges in the U.S.‐Mexican border region
This article examines law enforcement and security challenges of the U.S.‐Mexican border region in light of the emergent, but still inchoate policy regime following from the September 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. Unlike long‐standing challenges rooted in basic economic forces of supply‐and‐demand, the new national security challenges confronted in the post‐9/11 context are the result of the deliberate intent to cause harm.
