  • Evaluating usability and acceptance of a socially assistive robot supported cognitive training for depression – results of the randomized controlled pilot study ‘Amiga’

Open Access•Alfred Haeussl, Ina Zwigl et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2026

The integration of socially assistive robots (SARs) in mental healthcare offers promising opportunities to enhance traditional treatments. The humanoid SAR "Pepper" has shown potential for supporting cognitive and emotional interventions for individuals. While SAR acceptance has been explored in general healthcare, limited evidence exists regarding its usability and acceptance among individuals with affective disorders. This study aimed to assess…

  • Changes in tryptophan breakdown associated with response to multimodal treatment in depression

Open Access•Eva Z Reininghaus, Melanie Lenger et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

The results indicate that some compounds of the KYN pathway metabolites can be altered through multimodal long-term interventions in association with treatment response. Especially the pathway degrading KYN further down to 3-HAA and 3-HK/KYN might be decisive for treatment response in depression

  • Feeling Informed and Safe Are Important Factors in the Psychosomatic Health of Frontline Workers in the Health Sector during the Covid-19 Pandemic in Austria

Open Access•Melanie Lenger, Alexander Maget et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

COVID-19 work-related fears and psychosomatic symptoms have been prevalent among healthcare workers throughout the pandemic. Feeling safe and informed appears to be essential to prevent psychosomatic symptoms, leading to a recommendation for employers in the healthcare sector to focus on communication and information. As frontline workers are especially prone to psychosomatic symptoms, more stress prevention programs for them will be essential to…

  • Believing processes around Covid-19 vaccination

Open Access•Eugène Fleischmann, Eva Fleischmann et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

In conclusion, unvaccinated WHS had more negative and less positive emotions and thoughts than vaccinated WHS in their beliefs about the COVID-19 vaccination and their motivations for not having received it. They were more certain about their beliefs and felt stronger negative emotions in their beliefs compared to vaccinated individuals. Providing unvaccinated WHS with adequate information might be helpful in reducing their mental burden

  • Believing Processes during the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Open Access•Jolana Wagner‐Skacel, Jolana Wagner-Skacel et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Cognition, emotion, emotional regulation, and believing play a special role in psychosocial functioning, especially in times of crisis. So far, little is known about the process of believing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to examine the process of believing (using the Model of Credition) and the associated psychosocial strain/stress during the first lockdown in the COVID-19 pandemic. An online survey via LimeSurvey was co…

  • Greater Emotional Distress Due to Social Distancing and Greater Symptom Severity during the Covid-19 Pandemic in Individuals with Bipolar Disorder

Open Access•Elena Schönthaler, Nina Dalkner et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health of individuals with bipolar disorders (BD) is potentially more vulnerable, especially regarding COVID-19-related regulations and associated symptomatic changes. A multicentric online study was conducted in Austria, Germany, and Denmark during the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, data from 494 participants were collected (203 individuals with BD, 291 healthy controls (HC)). Participants filled out questio…

  • Influences of Covid-19 Work-Related Fears and Anhedonia on Resilience of Workers in the Health Sector during the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Open Access•Alexander Maget, Melanie Lenger et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2022•Referências: 2

Background: During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers worked under stressful conditions, challenging their individual resilience. Therefore, we explored the bidirectional influence of resilience and the factors of COVID-19 work-related fears and anhedonia in Austrian healthcare workers. Methods: Healthcare workers in Austria completed an online survey at two points in time. The first measurement started in winter 2020/2021 (t1)…

  • Monitoring Sleep Changes via a Smartphone App in Bipolar Disorder

Open Access•Frederike T Fellendorf, Carlo Hamm et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Background: Sleep disturbances are common early warning signs of an episode of bipolar disorder, and early recognition can favorably impact the illness course. Symptom monitoring via a smartphone app is an inexpensive and feasible method to detect an early indication of changes such as sleep. The study aims were (1) to assess the acceptance of apps and (2) to validate sleeping times measured by the smartphone app UP! . Methods: UP! was used by 22…

  • Covid-19 Pandemic Stress-Induced Somatization in Transplant Waiting List Patients

    Open Access•Jolana Wagner‐Skacel, Jolana Wagner-Skacel et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in widespread socioeconomic restrictions including quarantine, social distancing and self-isolation. This is the first study investigating the psychological impact of the pandemic on patients waiting for liver or kidney transplantation, a particularly vulnerable group. Methods: Twenty-seven patients on the transplantation waiting list and 43 healthy controls took part in an…

  • Deficient Decision Making in Pathological Gamblers Correlates With Gray Matter Volume in Medial Orbitofrontal Cortex

Open Access•Daniel Freinhofer, Philipp Schwartenbeck et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

Individuals suffering from pathological gambling (PG) show impaired decision making, but it is still not clear how this impairment is related to other traits and neuroanatomical characteristics. In this study, we investigated how the influence of PG on decision making (1) is connected to different impulsivity facets and (2) how it is related to gray matter volume (GMV) in various brain regions. Twenty-eight diagnosed PG patients and 23 healthy co…
