Research in the Spanish Borderlands
When One Examines the Research and Writing on Spanish Colonial Alabama, 1780-1813, it is possible to conclude that this area has received the least emphasis of all Spanish Borderlands. This is unfortunate because there are tens of thousands of original sources extant. W HILE a full-scale study of Spain's economic problems in the Mississippi Valley is necessary before any basic conclusions can be drawn, it is possible to examine some of the major problems of the seven Spanish governors-general of Louisiana from 1766 through 1799, and to draw parallels.
