Nitrogen Discharge from Livestock Wastes Thrown in Unlined Pit and Denitrification around the Pit
Numerous groundwater problems involving nitrate contamination, mainly derived from fertilizer and livestock waste, are reported worldwide. In Japan, although livestock wastes thrown in unlined pits has been banned by a law established in 1999, unlined pits still remain, causing high nitrogen discharges into groundwater. At the Tsukuba Plateau Ibaraki Pref., groundwater with more than 100 mgNO3−/L is observed just below an old unlined pit with 4.1…
Groundwater Contamination by Nitrate Ions in the Highly Urbanized Shinagawa Area, Central Tokyo, Japan
Shallow groundwater in the densely populated Shinagawa area (Kita-Shinagawa and Minami-Shinagawa), central Tokyo, was sampled from 10 shallow wells (less than 12 m deep) in February (cold dry season) and July (hot wet season) 2019. The concentrations in seven groundwater samples from Kita-Shinagawa in February and July were 1.6-34.1 mg/L and not detected −34.8 mg/L for NO3−, and 17.4-31.9 mg/L and 15.7-42.3 mg/L for Cl−. The measured isotopic rat…

In-situ Denitrification of Nitrate-nitrogen Contaminated Groundwater by a Permeable Reactive Barrier Using Sulfur–Limestone
The remediation effects of a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) using sulfur-limestone are investigated. The results show that highly concentrated NO3− (133-180 mg/L) in shallow groundwater decreased below the detection limit within the PRB. This phenomenon was maintained for approximately 300 days; therefore, the remediation effects within the PRB and its durability are demonstrated. It is suggested that the remediation effects due to the PRB are …

Origin of a Temporary Pond, Akaike, at the Northern Foot of Mount Fuji, Japan, July 2020
Akaike is a small, temporary pond located about 1 km east of Lake Shoji at the northern foot of Mt. Fuji, which appears following heavy rainfall events. It is widely accepted that the pond is connected to Lake Shoji by groundwater. However, this connection has not yet been evaluated because of a lack of scientific data including water quality and environmental isotopes from both Akaike Pond and Lake Shoji. Major dissolved ion and trace element co…
Psychosis Relapse Prediction Leveraging Electronic Health Records Data and Natural Language Processing Enrichment Methods
We developed prediction models for psychosis relapse using the NLP-enrichment method. Models using clinical notes were more effective than models using only structured data, suggesting the importance of unstructured data in psychosis prediction
Application of Epidemiological Geographic Information System
As an open-source, cross-country, spatial analytics solution, AEGIS may globally assess the differences in geographical distribution of health outcomes through the use of standardized geocode and observational health databases
