Socio-economic inequalities in minimum dietary diversity among Ethiopian children aged 6–23 months
Background: Globally, inappropriate feeding practices account for more than two-thirds of all cases of child mortality during the first 2 years of a child's life. For a long time, Ethiopia has suffered from the double burden of malnutrition: overnutrition and undernutrition both pose significant challenges, particularly for children. Undernutrition is mainly caused by wealth and educational disparities across the country. Therefore, this study ai…
Inequalities in utilization of maternal health services in Ethiopia
Background: Previous studies documented the existence of substantial inequalities in the utilization of maternal health services across different population subgroups in Ethiopia. Regularly monitoring the state of inequality could enhance efforts to address health inequality in the utilization of maternal health services. Therefore, this study aimed to measure the level of inequalities in the utilization of maternal health services in Ethiopia. M…
Incomplete basic vaccination and associated factors among children aged 12–23 months in resource-limited countries
Background Childhood basic vaccinations are a cost-effective and essential preventive health strategy globally in resource-limited nations. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals aim to reach these ambitious targets, making it crucial to identify underserved populations and address the barriers they face in accessing life-saving immunizations. To date, no spatial analyses have been performed to identify areas of hotspots of incomplete b…
A higher burden of post-stroke depression and anxiety and their predictors among stroke survivors in the Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia, in 2024
Relatively higher burdens of post-stroke depression and anxiety were observed among stroke survivors in the Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia. Variables such as sex, stroke complication, and comorbidity, and retirement, time for hospitalization, and comorbidity were predictors significantly associated with post-stroke depression and anxiety, respectively. Early mental health screening and diagnosis of old age, complicated case patients, and retired…
Estimated effect of media use on mothers’ vaccination of their children in Sub-Saharan Africa
This study finding highlighted that policymakers and planners in SSA countries should give great emphasis to further enhancing media exposure coverage for target groups since it has a substantial impact on improving childhood vaccination uptake. Further research is recommended to examine the cause-effect relationship of media exposure on childhood vaccination by including more proximal variables that were not observed in the present study
Decomposing socioeconomic and educational inequalities in infant mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa
Our analysis reveals that wealth-related disparities in infant mortality disproportionately impact poorer populations in Sub-Saharan Africa, with children of mothers who possess lower socioeconomic status and less education facing higher risks. Factors contributing to these disparities include family size, media exposure, and birth order. The persistence of social injustice is largely due to the inadequate response to these health inequalities. P…
Three in four children age 12–23 months missed opportunities for vaccination in Sub-Saharan African countries
The overall pooled prevalence of missed opportunities for vaccination in Sub-Saharan remains high. Children's age, maternal age, marital status, education, antenatal care visit, health insurance utilization, sex of household head, religion, place of delivery, residence, media exposure, distance to reach health facility, community wealth status, community educational status, and human development index of the countries were significantly associate…
Justification of physical intimate partner violence among married men in East Africa evidence from the recent demographic and health survey (2015–2022)
In East Africa, about 24% of men agreed that physical IPV is justified. Reducing the justification of physical IPV requires advancing men's educational standing, men's economic status, and increased media awareness, with a focus on rural men and promoting educational and awareness campaigns at community level is needed
Rural–urban disparity in community-based health insurance enrollment in Ethiopia
Background In sub-Saharan Africa, achieving universal health coverage (UHC) and protecting populations from health-related financial hardship remain challenging goals. Subsequently, community-based health insurance (CBHI) has gained interest in low and middle-income countries, such as Ethiopia. However, the rural–urban disparity in CBHI enrollment has not been properly investigated using multivariate decomposition analysis. Therefore, this study …
Measuring socioeconomic inequalities in postnatal health checks for newborns in Ethiopia
Background: Addressing health inequity is a top priority for achieving sustainable development goals. The existing evidences in Ethiopia have shown that there are substantial inequalities in the use of health services among various socioeconomic strata. Therefore, the present study aimed to measure socioeconomic inequalities and the contributing factors in postnatal health checks for newborns in Ethiopia. Methods: We used a secondary data from th…
Only 9% of mothers have eight and more ANC visit in 14 sub-saharan African countries; evidence from the most recent DHS 2018–2023
In the 14 SSA included in this study, there is low adherence to WHO guidelines of eight and more ANC visits. Being educated, having jobs, getting access to media being from rural residence and rich wealth group contribute to having eight and more ANC visits, so we highly recommend policy implementers to advocate this practices
