Continuing large-scale global trade and illegal trade of highly hazardous chemicals
Pollution caused by anthropogenic chemicals contributes to interlinked planetary crises, together with climate change and biodiversity loss. One of the key treaties adopted to regulate the transboundary movements of hazardous chemicals is the Rotterdam Convention, which created a framework for countries to better handle the international trade of certain hazardous chemicals. To date, research examining the effectiveness of the Convention has been…
Diversity and Distribution Characteristics of Soil Microbes across Forest–Peatland Ecotones in the Permafrost Regions
Permafrost peatlands are a huge carbon pool that is uniquely sensitive to global warming. However, despite the importance of peatlands in global carbon sequestration and biogeochemical cycles, few studies have characterized the distribution characteristics and drivers of soil microbial community structure in forest-peatland ecotones. Here, we investigated the vertical distribution patterns of soil microbial communities in three typical peatlands …
Conversion of coastal marshes to croplands decreases organic carbon but increases inorganic carbon in saline soils
Over the past century, conversion to agriculture has greatly reduced the global extent of coastal wetlands leading to degradation and loss of these ecosystems. However, it remains unclear how this land conversion affects the confluent soil organic and inorganic carbon (SOC and SIC) storage as well as their localizations in soil matrix. Here, we investigated these issues using wet sieving at two coastal saline–alkali sites in northern China. Conve…
Spatial Variations of Trace Metals and Their Complexation Behavior with DOM in the Water of Dianchi Lake, China
The dynamics of trace metals and the complexation behavior related to organic matter in the interface between water and sediment would influence water quality and evolution in the lake system. This study characterized the distribution of trace metals and the optical properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the surface, and the underlying and pore water of Dianchi Lake (DC) to understand the origin of metals and complexation mechanisms to D…
Heavy Metal Accumulation in Common Aquatic Plants in Rivers and Lakes in the Taihu Basin
We investigated the concentrations of 10 heavy metals in Potamogeton malaianus , Nymphoides peltata , Eichhornia crassipes , and Hydrilla verticillata to evaluate their potential to bioaccumulate heavy metals and related influencing factors in Taihu Lake. Enrichment factor (EF) values of Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn, Co, Pb, and V were above 2.0, indicating moderate to significant contamination in sediment. Most of Ti, V, Cr, Mn, and Ni in P. malaianus , E…
