Women and clinicians’ views, preferences and experiences of caesarean section and vaginal birth in India
INTRODUCTION: Caesarean use in India continues to rise and significant disparities exist. However, women and clinicians' views are under-researched. This paper aims to explore women and clinicians' views and preferences for mode of birth in two government hospitals in urban central India. METHODS: This qualitative study involved 53 semistructured interviews with high-risk women before and after induction of labour and eight focus groups with clin…
Global, regional, and national burden of diabetes from 1990 to 2021, with projections of prevalence to 2050
BACKGROUND: Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, and affects people regardless of country, age group, or sex. Using the most recent evidentiary and analytical framework from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD), we produced location-specific, age-specific, and sex-specific estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden from 1990 to 2021, the proportion of type 1 and type 2 diabetes…
Mapping the stability of febrile illness hotspots in Punjab from 2012 to 2019- a spatial clustering and regression analysis
The study demonstrates that information obtained through IDSP can describe the spatial epidemiology of FI at crude spatial scales and drive concerted efforts against FI by identifying actionable points
Population-level risks of alcohol consumption by amount, geography, age, sex, and year
BACKGROUND: The health risks associated with moderate alcohol consumption continue to be debated. Small amounts of alcohol might lower the risk of some health outcomes but increase the risk of others, suggesting that the overall risk depends, in part, on background disease rates, which vary by region, age, sex, and year. METHODS: For this analysis, we constructed burden-weighted dose-response relative risk curves across 22 health outcomes to esti…
Cancer Incidence, Mortality, Years of Life Lost, Years Lived With Disability, and Disability-Adjusted Life Years for 29 Cancer Groups From 2010 to 2019
IMPORTANCE: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019 (GBD 2019) provided systematic estimates of incidence, morbidity, and mortality to inform local and international efforts toward reducing cancer burden. OBJECTIVE: To estimate cancer burden and trends globally for 204 countries and territories and by Sociodemographic Index (SDI) quintiles from 2010 to 2019. EVIDENCE REVIEW: The GBD 2019 estimation methods were used t…
Second Hand Smoke Exposure among Children in Indian Homes
Children are vulnerable to second hand smoke (SHS) exposure because of limited control over their indoor environment, especially at homes. This study determines the magnitude, patterns and determinants of SHS exposure in the home among children in India. Data collected under the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) data, a household survey of adults ≥15 years of age during 2016-2017 conducted in India were analyzed to estimate the proportion of chi…
Global, regional, and national progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 for neonatal and child health
BACKGROUND: Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 has targeted elimination of preventable child mortality, reduction of neonatal death to less than 12 per 1000 livebirths, and reduction of death of children younger than 5 years to less than 25 per 1000 livebirths, for each country by 2030. To understand current rates, recent trends, and potential trajectories of child mortality for the next decade, we present the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, a…
Spatial, temporal, and demographic patterns in prevalence of smoking tobacco use and attributable disease burden in 204 countries and territories, 1990–2019
BACKGROUND: Ending the global tobacco epidemic is a defining challenge in global health. Timely and comprehensive estimates of the prevalence of smoking tobacco use and attributable disease burden are needed to guide tobacco control efforts nationally and globally. METHODS: We estimated the prevalence of smoking tobacco use and attributable disease burden for 204 countries and territories, by age and sex, from 1990 to 2019 as part of the Global B…
Rising Catastrophic Expenditure on Households Due to Tuberculosis
Introduction: One of the targets of the END-TB strategy is to ensure zero catastrophic expenditure on households due to TB. The information about household catastrophic expenditure is limited in India and, therefore difficult to monitor. The objective is to estimate household and catastrophic expenditure for Tuberculosis using national sample survey data. Methods: For arriving at out-of-pocket expenditure due to tuberculosis and its impact on hou…
Impact of Health Warning Labels on Cigarette Packs in India
Two rounds of Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) were conducted in 2009-10 and 2016-17 in India. These two surveys provide national comparable data on tobacco usage and its related aspects in India. This study used the data from GATS 2016-17 to examine the salience and impact of cigarette pack pictorial health warnings (PHWs) on quit intention among current cigarette smokers in India. The nationally representative survey interviewed 74, 037 respo…
Active versus passive case finding for tuberculosis in marginalised and vulnerable populations in India
We did not find significant differences in the treatment outcomes. Due to the wide CIs, studies with larger sample sizes are urgently required. Studies are required to understand how to translate the benefits of ACF to improved treatment outcomes
Suicidal ideation and attempt among school going adolescents in Bhutan – a secondary analysis of a global school-based student health survey in Bhutan 2016
Suicidal behaviour among school going adolescents in Bhutan is high and alarming, especially among girls. Bullying, sexual violence, feeling of loneliness and drug abuse were some of the key risk factors identified. It is important to identify these risk factors early and effectively tackle them in order to prevent suicides. It requires a multi-faceted intervention with the support of the children, community, teachers and parents
Does the Structured Operational Research and Training Initiative (Sort IT) continue to influence health policy and/or practice
BACKGROUND: The Structured Operational Research and Training Initiative (SORT IT) is a successful model of integrated operational research and capacity building with about 90% of participants completing the training and publishing in scientific journals. OBJECTIVE: The study aims at assessing the influence of research papers from six SORT IT courses conducted between April 2014 and January 2015 on policy and/or practice. METHODS: This was a cross…
Active case finding among marginalised and vulnerable populations reduces catastrophic costs due to tuberculosis diagnosis
BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence on whether active case finding (ACF) among marginalised and vulnerable populations mitigates the financial burden during tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of ACF among marginalised and vulnerable populations on prevalence and inequity of catastrophic costs due to TB diagnosis among TB-affected households when compared with passive case finding (PCF). METHODS: In 18 randomly samp…
Urban rural differences in diet, physical activity and obesity in India
Poor dietary practices and physical inactivity seems to fuel the non-communicable disease epidemic in India. Non communicable disease control strategy need to address these issues with a gender equity lens. Rapid urbanization of rural India might be responsible for the absence of a significant urban rural difference
Dynamics of multi-stakeholder engagement and its role in achieving high compliance of a tobacco control programme
