Emilio Rabasa and the Survival of Porfirian Liberalism
This book presents an intellectual and career biography of Emilio Rabasa, the eminent Mexican jurist, politician, novelist, diplomat, journalist, and historian who opposed the Revolution of 1910–20, spent the years 1914 to 1920 in exile, but returned and was reintegrated into Mexican life until his death in 1930. Though he is still idolized by the juridical community of Mexico City, little is known about Rabasa beyond his principal publications. …

Edmundo O'Gorman, Mexican National History and the 'Great American Dichotomy
Over a period of half a century, from the 1940s to the 1990s, Edmundo O'Gorman came to occupy a unique place in Mexican historiography. Though he might be considered as quasi-aristocratic in his thought and in his bearing, he spent his entire career as teacher and scholar at the popular Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), not at the more elitist El Colegio de México. Unlike Daniel Cosío Villegas, with whom he is often paired as the le…
Para mexicanizar el Segundo Imperio
The Second Empire, governed by Maximilian of Austria from 1864 to 1867, has long been the stepchild of Mexican political historiography. Liberal historians have vilified its adherents as traitors and ridiculed the trappings of monarchy as an exotic intrusion into a republican and progressively democratic world. Erika Pani, in this remarkably judicious, thoughtful, and thoroughgoing study, has successfully demonstrated that the Empire had a natura…
The Civil Law Tradition and Constitutionalism in Twentieth-Century Mexico
Constitutionalism in Mexico, indeed in Latin America generally, has always posed a problem for interpreters, especially for Anglo-American interpreters. It is true that adherence to a written constitution and to constitutional order has been central to Mexican political liberalism since independence. As a state-building philosophy, liberalism has functioned both as an ideology, in combat with inherited colonial and Hispanic patterns of government…

Frank Tannenbaum and the Mexican Revolution
A M MONG historians of Latin America, Frank Tannenbaum enjoys the reputation of a pioneer, especially in two areas. His monograph The Mexican Agrarian Revolution (1929) was the first systematic and detailed treatment of the Mexican agrarian system and the policies designed to reform it. The Transformation of Liberalism in Late Nineteenth-Century Mexico
A leading intellectual historian of Latin America here examines the changing political ideas of the Mexican intellectual and quasi-governmental elite during the period of ideological consensus from the victory of Benito Juárez of 1867 into the 1890s. Looking at Mexican political thought in a comparative Western context, Charles Hale fully describes how triumphant liberalism was transformed by its encounter with the philosophy of positivism. In so…

Lewis covers are the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century beginnings of thought, pro- and antislavery ideologies, the growth of Antillean nationalist and anticolonialist thought…

The History of Ideas
One of the most striking developments in Mexican historiography during the last twenty-five years is the burgeoning of the genre known as the 'history of ideas'. The origins of the movement date back to 1925, when German historicist and existentialist philosophy made its entry into Mexico through the ideas of José Ortega y Gasset. More recently the impetus came from the seminar in the History of Ideas initiated at El Colegio de México and at the …

The Reconstruction of Nineteenth-Century Politics in Spanish America
The historiography of the nineteenth-century political process in latin America is in trouble. With the burgeoning of Latin American history as a professional activity, historians are increasingly "moving beyond" past politics to study social and economic themes. The traditional treatments of the nineteenth century, dedicated to glorifying or debunking heroic leaders, to perpetuating old partisan and ideological struggles, or even to presenting i…

The Liberal Impulse
NE OF THE REMARKABLE historiographic enterprises of our time has at last been completed.' It is remarkable for many reasons, not the least of which is the sheer dedication, will, and industry of Daniel Cosio Villegas, its director and principal author. The Historia modern de Mexico is a monumental work. Its nine stout volumes and 9,017 pages lay open in a basic documentary sense a large and important period of Mexican history, the years 1867 to 1…
