Integrating noncommunicable disease care in a public primary health care facility in North Lebanon
Integrated care for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) may enhance care delivery, clinical impact, user-satisfaction, and access. However, evidence on integrated NCD care in humanitarian settings remains scarce. This qualitative study accompanied the first year of implementation (March 2023 to March 2024) of an integrated care programme at an International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)-supported, Ministry of Public Health-affiliated primary hea…
Implementing (and evaluating) peer support with people living with noncommunicable diseases in humanitarian settings
In line with the peer reviewers comments, the authors have added highlights in stead of an abstract. It was felt that it was better able to capture the findings and is more in line with the paper's target audience
Implementing and evaluating integrated care models for non-communicable diseases in fragile and humanitarian settings
In this commentary, we advocate for the wider implementation of integrated care models for NCDs within humanitarian preparedness, response, and resilience efforts. Since experience and evidence on integrated NCD care in humanitarian settings is limited, we discuss potential benefits, key lessons learned from other settings, and lessons from the integration of other conditions that may be useful for stakeholders considering an integrated model of …
Providing continuity of care for people living with noncommunicable diseases in humanitarian settings
We recommend that humanitarian actors continue the work underway with the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health to align with and strengthen health system inputs, including supporting health governance through the accreditation process, exploring new funding mechanisms, strengthening the workforce via task sharing and training, supporting the medication supply chain, improving access to facilities and service quality, and supporting the development,…
Patient experiences of diabetes and hypertension care during an evolving humanitarian crisis in Lebanon
Humanitarian health care models increasingly incorporate care for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Current research evidence focuses on burden of disease, service provision and access to care, and less is known about patient’s experience of the continuum of care in humanitarian settings. To address this gap, this study explored experiences of displaced Syrian and vulnerable Lebanese patients receiving care for hypertension and/or diabetes at fou…
Developing an integrated model of care for vulnerable populations living with non-communicable diseases in Lebanon
ToC is a useful tool to deconstruct the complexity of integrating NCD services. We highlight that integrated care rests on multidisciplinary and patient-centred approaches, which depend on a well-trained and resourced team, strong leadership, and adequate information systems. This paper provides the first theory-driven road map of implementation pathways, to help support the integration of NCD care for crises-affected populations in Lebanon and g…
Conducting operational research in humanitarian settings
In humanitarian contexts, it is a difficult and multi-faceted task to enlist academics, humanitarian actors and health authorities in a collaborative research effort. The lack of research in such settings has been widely described in the past decade, but few have analysed the challenges in building strong and balanced research partnerships. The major issues include considering operational priorities, ethical imperatives and power differentials. T…
Utilization of primary health care services among Syrian refugee and Lebanese women targeted by the ICRC program in Lebanon
Despite the ICRC reaching the most vulnerable Syrian and Lebanese communities, the population-based survey revealed that important gaps exist in terms of utilization of health care services among women of reproductive age and their children. A stronger outreach component is needed to address lack of awareness. Innovative solutions are also needed to address cost barriers at the levels of both facility and individual user
