The goal of this study was to investigate the contextual nature of prenatal depression (PND) and postpartum depression (PPD). BACKGROUND: Health disparities of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have been a longstanding public health concern. Unlike the engagement of service sectors and governmental entities in advocating for human rights and health equity, the nursing profession remains absent from these discussions. Data from three NIH Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program cohorts that collected the HOME-Infant-Toddler (HOME-IT age 0–3 years) version were used to examine the reliability of a brief scale of caregiver support and cognitive stimulation. Findings from this large, sociodemographically diverse cohort suggest women's exposures to interpersonal violence and major stressful events-common for women during pregnancy-may prenatally program her child's executive functioning and externalizing problems.
