Rumors of Our Deaths
This paper addresses the suggestion that "fake news" would be better called "folk news." It explores the tale of the death and subsequent replacement by an impostor of a nineteenth-century celebrity, comparing that story to similar tales about Paul McCartney and Mark Twain. The legends and proverbs created in the context of these news reports suggest that "fake news" is not the same as "folk news," largely because "folk" does not mean "fake

A. L. Lloyd and Reynardine
This paper presents new evidence concerning the broadside ballad “Reynardine,” which became popular in the British folksong revival movement of the 1960s and 1970s. It argues that the revival versions of this ballad were not products of the folk tradition, but rather descendants of a text authored by A. L. Lloyd, who was both a singer and a folksong scholar. In Britain and Ireland, as in America, period following World War II saw a blossoming of interest in traditional music, leading to a boom in 1960s. Indeed, postwar British, Irish, and North American folk revivals are historically inseparable, as they influenced one another deeply.
