  • Nursing Homes

    Jeanie Kayser-Jones, Jeanie Kayser‐Jones•ARTICLE•Family & Community Health•2009

Health promotion and disease prevention in nursing homes (NHs) are important but highly neglected issues. This study compares the care of residents in 2 proprietary NHs (a dependency-promoting environment) with the care of residents on a hospice unit at a government-owned facility (a health-promoting environment). Open Access•Jeanie Kayser-Jones, Jeanie Kayser‐Jones•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2003•Citada por: 2•Referências: 5

To illustrate the potential controversial nature of the research findings, the author first presents data from an ongoing study on the care of terminally ill nursing home residents, then responds to the question: "How can you go into nursing homes, find out all that you do, publish your findings, and continue to gain access to nursing homes?" Strategies used over the past 20 years to gain this access and to develop and maintain harmonious relatio…

The author presents findings from studies investigating the factors that influence the quality of care in nursing homes. The findings disclose that multiple factors, such as lack of individualized care, inattention to problems such as dysphagia and oral health care, and especially inadequate staffing and lack of professional supervision contribute to malnutrition, dehydration, and weight loss among nursing home residents. She describes how these …

This article investigates the social-cultural factors and other circumstances that influence decision making in the treatment of acute illness in three West Coast nursing homes. Participant observation, in-depth interviews with physicians, nursing staff, nursing home residents, and family members, and event analysis were used to gather data. Using decision-making theory as the theoretical framework, analysis focuses on how internal and external f…

  • The uneasy fate of nursing home residents

    Open Access•Carolyn L Wiener, Jeanie Kayser‐jone et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•1990•Citada por: 5•Referências: 20

This paper examines the macrosociological and organisational conditions which impinge on those who are most directly involved in decisions about nursing home patients: kin, physicians and nursing staff. Focus is on the organisational-interaction interplay, through use of an 'illness trajectory' framework. This analysis sheds light on the differing effect of external and internal conditions on members of each group and on the work they are called …
