  • Female sex worker preferences for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis delivery in Uganda

Open Access•Ruth Mpirirwe, Rita Makabayi‐Mugabe et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Cisgender female sex workers (FSWs) in sub-Saharan Africa have a high risk of HIV acquisition, highlighting the need for innovative approaches to expand coverage of evidence-based HIV prevention methods, including oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Our study aimed to identify FSWs’ preferences for a PrEP delivery model with structured choices for delivery location, services offered, and adherence support. We conducted a discrete choice experim…

  • Acceptability of short message service reminders as the support tool for PrEP adherence among young women in Mukono district, Uganda

Open Access•Laban Muteebwa, Edith Joloba Nakku et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) have a disproportionately high incidence of HIV compared to males of the same age in Uganda. AGYW are a priority sub-group for daily oral Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), but their adherence has consistently remained low. Short Message Service (SMS) reminders could improve adherence to PrEP in AGYW. However, there is paucity of literature about acceptability of SMS reminders among AGYW using PrEP. We assess…

  • Village health team-delivered oral HIV self-testing increases linkage-to-care and antiretroviral-therapy initiation among men in Uganda

Joanita Nangendo, Fred C Semitala et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2024

Targeted strategies are central to increasing HIV-status awareness and progress on the care cascade among men. We implemented Village-Health-Team (VHT)-delivered HIV self-testing (HIVST) among men in a peri-urban Ugandan district and assessed linkage to confirmatory-testing, antiretroviral-therapy (ART) initiation and HIV-status disclosure following HIVST. We conducted a prospective cohort study from November 2018 to June 2019 and enrolled 1628 m…

  • Uptake and perceptions of oral HIV self-testing delivered by village health teams among men in Central Uganda

Open Access•Joanita Nangendo, Anne R Katahoire et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends HIV self-testing (HIVST) to increase access to and utilization of HIV services among underserved populations. We assessed the uptake and perceptions of oral HIVST delivered by Village Health Teams (VHTs) among men in a peri-urban district in Central Uganda. We used a concurrent parallel mixed methods study design and analyzed data from 1628 men enrolled in a prospective cohort in Mpigi district, Cent…

  • High burden of hepatitis B infection in Northern Uganda

Open Access•Emmanuel Ochola, Ponsiano Ocama et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

We found a high prevalence of hepatitis B infection and lifetime exposures to hepatitis B in this northern Uganda Municipality. Targeted vaccination of susceptible adults and improving existing childhood vaccinations and provision of treatment for those with infection will play roles in reducing the high prevalence rates seen in the population

  • Prevalence and factors associated with traditional herbal medicine use among patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy in Uganda

Open Access•Betty Namuddu, Joan N Kalyango et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

The prevalence of THM use among participants on HAART was high. This raises clinical and pharmacological concerns that need attention by the health care service providers

  • Association between invasive cancer of the cervix and HIV-1 infection in Tanzania

Open Access•Crispin Kahesa, Julius Mwaiselage et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2008

HIV-1 infection is associated with invasive cancer of the cervix. Resource-constrained countries with a high burden of HIV-1 and cervical cancer should adopt a high-risk approach that targets HIV-1 positive women for screening of cervical cancer initially by utilizing HIV/AIDS resources

  • Voluntary HIV counselling and testing among men in rural western Uganda

Open Access•Francis Mulekya Bwambale, Sarah Ssali et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2008

VCT use among men in Bukonzo West, Kasese district was low. In order to increase VCT use among men, the VCT programme needs to address HIV stigma and improve access and confidentiality of VCT services. Among the more promising interventions are the use of routine counselling and testing for HIV of patients seeking health care in health units, home based VCT programmes, and mainstreaming of HIV counselling and testing services in community develop…

  • Determinants of infant growth in Eastern Uganda

Open Access•Ingunn Marie Stadskleiv Engebretsen, Thorkild Tylleskär et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2008

Sub-optimal infant feeding practices after birth, poor household wealth, age, gender and family size were associated with growth among Ugandan infants

  • Antenatal HIV testing in rural eastern Uganda in 2003

Open Access•Charles Karamagi, Charles AS Karamagi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC International Health and…•2006

BACKGROUND: Uganda began to implement the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV programme in 2000, and by the end of 2003 it had expanded to cover 38 of the 56 districts including Mbale District. However, reports from Mbale Hospital showed that less than 10% of pregnant women accepted antenatal HIV testing. We therefore conducted a study to determine the proportion of pregnant women who tested for HIV and the gaps and barriers…

  • Intimate partner violence against women in eastern Uganda

Open Access•Charles Karamagi, Charles AS Karamagi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

Intimate partner violence is common in eastern Uganda and is related to gender inequality, multiple partners, alcohol, and poverty. Accordingly, programmes for the prevention of intimate partner violence need to target these underlying factors. The suggested link between intimate partner violence and HIV risky behaviours or prevention strategies calls for further studies to clearly establish this relationship
